Status Coup News is an independent news network that reports ON-THE-GROUND across the country—what we call the United Corporations of America— on the important stories the corporate media exists to COVER UP. Funded by working people, rather than billionaires, we expose and cover corruption, worker exploitation and workers fighting back, protest movements, environmental injustice, and the progressive movement.
Our mission is simple: to give the microphone back to the people. Led by veteran independent journalist Jordan Chariton, Status Coup shows up IN THE TRENCHES to put a spotlight on the stories mainstream media ignored and abandoned long ago.

It feels untoward celebrating anything as the country continues to burn amidst a raging fascism fire, but we do want to momentarily cheer that we’ve hit 700,000 subscribers (after just hitting 600,000 less than three weeks ago)! Overall, we grew 128,000 subscribers this month—by far a record for Status Coup.
But more important than the numbers and growth are…the people. Our greatest reward are all the people coming up to us at protests thanking our reporters and video journalists for what we’re doing—and for the risks we’re taking (every single one of our team in Minneapolis has been gassed and hit with so-called “less lethal” ammunition). This work is extremely physically draining—and even more mentally. Therefore, it is the support of the people ON-THE-GROUND we cover—and the growing viewership across the world—that keeps us going on.
Thanks to JT Cestkowski and Jon Farina, who’ve been leading our coverage in Minneapolis (and Chicago before that). Also thanks to Zach D. Roberts and Tina-Desiree Berg for also reporting for us ON-THE-GROUND in Minneapolis this month (as well as Will Allen-Dupraw who is currently behind the camera for us there). They have all been pulling insane hours on limited sleep while dodging gas and grenades. And they WILL NOT get the notoriety of corporate media blowhards—but they are actually doing the journalism those assholes can only dream of.
Also thanks to our behind-the-scenes team that you don’t see on camera—but is responsible for all the video images, video editing and production on YouTube and social media, and technical and administrative support (and there is a GROWING amount of administrative work as we grow)…
Colin, Michelle, and Ty have been working INSANE DAYS AND HOURS to edit and produce all of this reporting and get it out quickly to the public. And I won’t bore you with the details of everything I’m doing, but trust me—’m working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week to manage and direct all of this. Although my heart wants to be ON THE GROUND reporting myself, I never wanted Status Coup to exclusively revolve around me—so it is gratifying to see us evolving with new voices and faces delivering the justice journalism this country needs.

Five years ago today, Status Coup video-journalist Jon Farina followed a mob headed toward the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The images Jon captured as he bravely live-streamed from inside the mob became the most iconic of the horrific day. For over two hours, he put his body on the line and went where so many mainstream outlets would not go. Farina kept his nerve even as Trump supporters attacked Capitol police officers, rammed barricades, shattered glass windows of the Capitol, and erected a makeshift noose and gallows while screaming “Hang Mike Pence!”
Without Jon, much of January 6th, 2021, might have been lost to history.

This morning near Minneapolis, our intrepid cameraman Jon Farina rushed to the scene of a standoff between ICE and construction workers as they were forced to remain on top of a roof in--minus 10 degree cold--to avoid being taken by ICE. After a several hour standoff, one worker became so ill he was forced to come down and immediately put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. ICE refused to provide the other worker--damn near freezing to death on the roof--with blankets or hand warmers to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. But Minnesotans rallied together, coming to the scene to STOP ICE from taking the second worker--eventually forcing ICE to leave without the worker. Our Jon Farina was out IN THIS SUB ZERO WEATHER FOR HOURS showing you fascism vs solidarity. In the process, he had to take his gloves off at points in order to make technical changes to his camera/audio/phone. In doing so, he lost feeling in his fingers--with them turning black. Once he ended our livestream, he went to urgent care--who told him to immediately head to the ER. In anguish in the waiting room, he feared he was going to lose a finger...or multiple. Thankfully, the damage was not that severe. He is in a lot of pain, but the doctor said he avoided severe frostbite and just had extreme cold exposure.
Jon has been all over this country for us for YEARS; putting his body--and mind--on the line for us and you so you can see the ugly face of fascism and capitalism...
