Important festival over the entire country which falls in the month of Ashvin(अश्विन) of the Autumn or Sharad Rithu( ऋतु) .Celebrated for the reason of the destruction of evil demon called Mahishasura ,who created havoc on the earth .Goddess Parvati killed the evil demon on shear penance .This is to prove the significance and power of women in the world.Celebrated for 10 days ...the most important day is Vijayadhasami or the 10 day .This day is special days for starting any good deeds (house ,work ,education ) .The preceding important day is called Saraswati Pooja which is the special day for Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of knowledge).The other days are also celebrated for these Devis.Skandamatha, Katyayani, Chandraghanta,Kali,Mahagauri,Brahmacharini,Siddhidatri,Kushmanda and Shailaputri. Shri Ganesh is known for his knowledge sympathy ,smartness and his calm and cheerful face. When once ,Lord shiva gave his sons a competition on whom ever come first on going around the world three times will be given a Jamun fruit.
Both the sons accepted the competition they were ready for the race .The race started and Lord Murugan flew around the world with his peacock 'Vaahan' .While Lord Ganesh stopped and went to the place where his parents were sitting .He went on revolving around them three times and he said I won the race while Lord Murugan came after a while .According to Murugan ,he won the race and his brother didn't start it self .But Lord Ganesh explained that our parents who created us are the entire world and I revolved them. Lord Shiva was amazed with his explanation and gave him the Jamun fruit. Lord Murugan appreciated his brother on winning the race .
