Donald Trump has deleted a Truth Social video depicting Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as monkeys, triggering bipartisan condemnation.

The post, shared during a late-night social media spree, also recycled debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 US election.

The imagery was condemned for echoing long-standing tropes historically used to dehumanise Black people.

Senior Republicans, including Senator Tim Scott, labelled the video “racist” and “totally unacceptable”, urging the president to remove it.

The White House initially dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage” before blaming an unnamed staffer for posting the clip in error.

Trump later said he did not watch the video in full, while Obama declined to comment.
