It’s More Than Just Money
I’ve heard a lot of people say they don’t want to buy a house because “the bank charges interest.” Let’s talk about that properly, without emotion.
If you finance a home for around R500,000 at current interest rates, your monthly bond works out to roughly R3,876. When you break that down, it’s about R125 a day — interest included.
Now think about this properly.
If you’re married with two kids, that’s about R31 per person per day for your family to live in a home you own. A home that grows in value every year. A home where every payment builds equity. A home that can one day be fully paid off.
And here’s the part most people forget. When you buy a home, you’re usually insured. If something happens to you, that bond gets settled. Your children don’t lose a roof over their heads. They inherit a paid-off home. That’s generational security.
So the real question is this — why are people comfortable spending more than R125 a day on food, takeaways, and things that disappear, but uncomfortable spending the same amount on an asset that grows and protects their family?
Yes, the bank charges interest. But what they’re giving you in return is access to an appreciating asset you probably couldn’t afford in cash. That’s the trade-off. And it’s a good one.
Rent feels easier, but rent builds nothing. Every rand you pay disappears forever. A bond, on the other hand, builds equity, discipline, and long-term security. That’s how wealth is created quietly, over time.

It’s More Than Just Money
I promised myself that I would afford to retire by my 30th Birthday, and when the time came, I could afford to retire. If you attended the very first event I hosted in 2020, after I published my book It’s More Than Just Money, I told everyone there that I was semi-retiring from property, handing over to property managers, and shifting my focus to my purpose; I wanted to fully understand my new role as an author and community leader.
At that time, I was not fully aware that my marriage was in danger of divorce. I thought everything was in sync. I had spent my mid-20s to 30 building, building, building. I had been married for five years, and at that point, I had fulfilled a promise I made to myself: that I would retire both my wife and me by our fifth wedding anniversary. By retirement, I practically meant achieving a life of financial independence.
I spent my 20s building businesses, growing property investment portfolios, and creating streams of income. I remember one time, in the fifth year of our marriage, my wife came to me and said she no longer wanted to work in government hospitals. She told me she’d like to take time off and instead do locum shifts at private hospitals, at her own leisure. My answer was simple: yes.
Two days into her locum work, she came back to me and told me that the practice where she had worked that week was up for sale! Of course, she came to the right person. Remember, I always told myself never to say no. Instead, I would ask, how can we do it without breaking the bank? I immediately set up an appointment with the practice owner and went there myself to see the practice that very evening.
I appealed to his human side. I shared my dream of retiring my wife by our fifth year of marriage and explained that I wanted to buy the practice, even though I didn’t have the full cash upfront. I asked if we could work out a payment plan and requested a month to raise the money. He mentioned that there were wealthier, older doctors interested in buying the practice, but for some reason, he liked me and wanted me to have it—provided I could give him a substantial deposit, which I would lose if I couldn’t raise the balance.
I went back home and immediately called up a friend of mine who was also my neighbor. He knew that I had recently tied up my liquid cash in property development. I asked him to lend me the deposit, and we agreed that I would repay him as soon as I refinanced one of our properties and got funds released.
That’s how we bought the practice: by telling the seller a genuine story and tapping into my social equity to raise the money. We later refinanced and paid off the balance. The rest is history.
For anyone who wonders, how does this guy have time to do podcasts, start new businesses, write so many posts, and still have a personal life?—well, I was semi-retired for a few months. But I was forced back into full-time work, which I don’t regret, because in 2021, when I was about 31 years old, I went through a divorce.
That experience pushed me to do something more meaningful with my life. Don’t get me wrong! I’ve always done meaningful work. Youth Ministry in church, helping young people find their place in society; but it more meaningful now. I became an author and impacted millions of people through social media, built a podcast, built a tech company, South Africa’s fastest growing proptech ecosystem that grew from zero users to 20 000 users in les than 12 months.
