This year marks my 25th year of playing the drums! I feel old AF but here are a few things I've learned along the way
1 - Comparison is a Killer
It's easy to compare yourself to others in drumming (and in life), but really try not to. There will always be someone faster, someone with shinier cymbals, someone who does the things you want to at a younger age.
Instead, only compare yourself with yourself. Are you better than you were 6 months ago? Have you grown as a musician or as a player?
Be proud of how far you have come and be excited about how far you can go.
2 - Drums Are Fun...Play for Fun Too!
I practice as much as I can, but in between lessons, creating video content and all the things that go along with all of that, the only time I get to play the drums is actually at gigs.
So I've been trying to play more just because drums are awesome and fun. If I have a few minutes before or after lessons, I'll put on a song and jam or just play drums solo and enjoy what I create.
Make sure you carve time out for play too.
3 - No One Can Tell You What To Practice
I started playing before the internet (yes, I'm that old!), but I still had a lot of different sources telling me what I should practice. Drum books, magazines and teachers all giving me stuff to work on. It was all so dizzying and overwhelming, and if I'm honest, mainly useless.
Now it's even worse with the internet! No one can or should tell you what to practice because they don't know your playing, your influences or your goals. What I like to do instead is show you how.
If you'd like to learn the HOW of practice and just just a series of mindless exercises then you should join me on my drum camp - The Creative Practice Camp
The camp is happening on the 20-22th July 2026 and takes place in a picturesque village just outside Edinburgh, Scotland.
You can find out all the information it by clicking this link - www.davemajormusic.com/camps P.s - Im running 2 other camps in 2026. The Technique and Facility Camp and the Sound Time and Feel Camp.
