Dehradun Defence College

Born: March 16, 1958, in Pauri, Uttarakhand.

His family had a strong military background; his father, Lt. Gen. Laxman Singh Rawat, also served in the Indian Army.

Education:

St. Edward’s School, Shimla

National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla

Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun — where he was awarded the Sword of Honour for best all-round cadet.

Later earned degrees from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and a Ph.D. from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

⚔️ Military Career

Commissioned into the 5th Battalion, 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1978, the same regiment as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

Served in high-altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir.

Commanded a brigade in the Congo as part of the UN peacekeeping mission — where he was awarded the Force Commander’s Commendation.

Held key posts:

General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command

Vice Chief of Army Staff

26th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) from December 31, 2016, to December 31, 2019

🌟 As Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)

Appointed as India’s first CDS on January 1, 2020.

Focused on jointness and modernization of the armed forces.

Played a key role in establishing the Department of Military Affairs (DMA).

Advocated for self-reliance in defence production (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
