🔴 DEVELOPING | Opposition Chairman Arrested Amid Lawmaker Detention Row in Liberia
Officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) on Saturday, June 7, arrested Jangar Kowo, Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), along with another supporter near the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) Headquarters on UN Drive. The two were reportedly protesting the detention of former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and three other sitting lawmakers.
Their arrests follow the controversial remanding of Koffa, along with Representatives Dixon Seboe, Abu Kamara, and Jacob Debee II, to the Monrovia Central Prison. The lawmakers face multiple charges, including arson, attempted murder, and conspiracy, stemming from the December 2024 Capitol Building fire.
Opposition parties—including the CDC, ANC, MOVEE, and CMC—condemned the arrests in a joint statement, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained lawmakers. They accused the government of abusing due process and using intimidation to suppress dissent.
“Summoning lawmakers at dawn and detaining them until nightfall with the clear intent to jail them is not justice—it is persecution,” the statement read.
With tensions rising, the opposition has warned that politically motivated arrests could threaten Liberia’s peace and democratic gains.

Liberia's Former House Speaker Arrested and Charged Amid Capitol Fire Investigation
📍 Monrovia, Liberia | June 7, 2025
Former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and three sitting lawmakers—Dixon W. Seboe, Abu Kamara, and Jacob Debee II—have been formally arrested and charged in connection with the December 2024 fire at the Capitol Building.
The lawmakers were remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison following their appearance at the Monrovia City Court. According to court filings, the charges include: arson, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, attempted murder, criminal facilitation, and criminal conspiracy.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) also arrested Jangar Kowo, Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), along with another party supporter, during a protest outside the Monrovia City Police Headquarters on UN Drive. Both were seen being placed into a police vehicle.
The arrests have triggered a swift response from Liberia’s opposition. In a joint statement, leaders of the CDC, Alternative National Congress (ANC), MOVEE, and the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) condemned the detentions as politically motivated. The opposition is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the lawmakers and accused the government of undermining due process.
The statement expressed concern that the lawmakers were allegedly held for nearly 12 hours on June 6 before being formally charged—an act the coalition described as a violation of legal norms.
This is a developing story. The Point Africa News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

By Staff Reporter | info@thepointafrica.news | Castaic, California
CASTAIC, CALIFORNIA — A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Hughes Fire, erupted near Castaic, California, on Wednesday, rapidly consuming over 8,000 acres and prompting mandatory evacuations for nearly 20,000 residents.
The blaze ignited shortly before 11 a.m. and swiftly expanded due to dry conditions and strong winds. Firefighters are battling the inferno, which remains at 0% containment. The fire has led to the closure of a 30-mile stretch of the 5 Freeway, causing significant disruptions.
Residents in the affected areas have been ordered to evacuate, with additional evacuation warnings issued for nearby communities. Emergency shelters have been established to accommodate those displaced by the fire.
The Hughes Fire is the latest in a series of wildfires that have plagued Southern California this season, following the Palisades and Eaton Fires, which collectively burned thousands of acres. Authorities are investigating the cause of the Hughes Fire and have urged residents to stay informed through official channels.
Meteorologists predict that upcoming rains may aid in controlling the blaze but also raise concerns about potential mudslides and flooding in the burn areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders and safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

Over 178,000 people have fled their homes in recent weeks, with the total number of displaced individuals exceeding 7 million due to prolonged conflict in the region. The rebels have captured strategic towns, including #Minova, triggering mass evacuations and chaos.
Displacement camps in Goma are overwhelmed, leaving many without basic necessities like food, shelter, or healthcare. The dire living conditions have further exacerbated mental health challenges, with aid organizations reporting a sharp increase in individuals seeking psychological support.
