This is Gottfried, my children's paternal grandfather; and also their father, and Tante Carmen.
Gottfried was studying engineering, in his childhood home, near the Chech border. when he was drafted. The one my heroic mother-in-law ran away to Yugoslawia, to marry, when he was detained by Tito, after the war, that I wrote a post about here befoe (He was a POW, and because of studying engineering, Tito detained him until 1954).
Upon release, he did not take his family back to the east, but to Ludwigshafen, and the home of an aunt, with whom they stayed, until Gottfried finished his engineering studies, and began earning a salary.
With his first salary, he bought a motorcycle, and sent it to Yugoslawia, to the Serbian man who had saved him, when he fell on a march, and was left for dead.
Very very few photos exist, of my children's father, at this very young age. The family did not yet own a camera.
