Many parents worry, “Is my child having a tantrum or a meltdown?”
Understanding the difference can completely change how we respond.
Tantrum:
Purpose-driven (wants something)
Child may check if you are watching
Stops when demand is met
Child has some control
Meltdown:
Not intentional
Caused by overwhelm
Child is not in control
Does NOT stop even if demands are met
Key reminder:
A meltdown is not manipulation. It is a neurological response to overload. Respond with support, not consequences.
