Community agreements aren’t just a beginning-of-the-year activity—they’re the structure that gives a classroom its civic life. Classroom management is never neutral. The routines we rely on, the authority we exercise, and the way we respond to conflict all teach students something about power, participation, and responsibility.

On Wednesday, January 28 at 4:00 PM (Eastern Time), join educator and researcher Tim Fredrick, Ph.D. for a free live webinar: Classroom Management for a Democratic Society. This session explores how traditional classroom management often prioritizes compliance, while relationship-based approaches help students practice participation, shared responsibility, and democratic habits in everyday classroom life.

The webinar is designed for teachers, instructional leaders, and school administrators who want classroom management to support engagement, belonging, and long-term civic development—not just order.

About the presenter
Tim Fredrick, Ph.D., is an educator, researcher, and curriculum leader with over two decades of experience working in classrooms, teacher preparation programs, and large-scale professional development. He previously served as a senior leader at a national education nonprofit, where he led the development of social-emotional learning curricula used nationwide and helped train thousands of educators across hundreds of school sites. He holds a Ph.D. in Education from NYU and is the founder of Pedagogy Guru.

This first post in my January Civic Classroom series looks at how every redirect, tone choice, and norm we establish sends civic messages about belonging, voice, and responsibility. If you’re rethinking what management really means in 2025, this is a good place to start.
