I have so far completed, from start to end, the following works of Dostoevsky:

1. Crime and Punishment
2. The Brothers Karamazov
3. The Idiot
4. His novellas and short stories such as The Gambler, White Nights, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, Bobok, Notes from Underground, etc.

Now, I want to start Devils (also known as Demons).

It is a lengthy book—somewhere around 1,000 pages. Reading it definitely excites me, but it is also exhausting, because after a point I keep revolving in the same psychological world as the characters. They even start appearing in my dreams (last time, it was Nastasya from The Idiot).

But a question arises: why should we read Devils at all?
What is so special about a book written in the 1860s?

Here are my few cents:
1. It shows why and how human beings turn evil, and how dangerous ideas can become.
2. Intellectuals often form ideas - sometimes extremely dangerous ones - to reshape society, but they lack the courage to act. Then a man of drive and will appears and executes those ideas, pushing them to their extremes. What follows is chaos, a dance of death, and the erosion of morality among the masses.
3. It makes you question whether good truly wins, because when evil strikes, it crushes every force in its way and bends power and history in its favour.
4. The novel does not tell you about evil - it shows you how evil looks, feels, thinks, and acts. It reveals that the devil is not some ugly, grotesque creature, but can be a handsome, charming man with an extraordinary tongue. His most dangerous strength lies in his ability to confuse you about your identity and your past, and make you believe and act on ideas that ultimately give him absolute power - while you live under the delusion that you are doing it for a greater good.
5. It makes you question who is actually good and who is evil. You begin to doubt whether an individual is evil, or whether the system that produces such individuals is the real culprit.
6. It presents a battle between logic and emotion. It raises an important question: when belief in God collapses and is not replaced by a stronger ideological structure, how does that impact the individual and society - especially when the masses are mostly poor? Can radical ideas like communism or elitism take its place?

If these questions stir something within you, you will find this book deeply enriching.

But mind you - this is not an easy read.
It requires not just eyes, but bones.

So when am I going to start?

Last night, Dostoevsky visited me from his grave. He grabbed my collar around 3 a.m. (yes, exactly then) and said:

“Sahil, you alone read me till the end.
The rest just click pictures, brag, and make quick reels by copying summaries from ChatGPT.
Now, for the benefit of this lazy generation… complete this too.”

Inputs are welcome.
Thanks for reading till the end.

Okay, so it’s been a long time since I posted something here. I prefer detailed conversations over calls and lengthy writings on paper, so bear with me.

I have been seriously engaged in literature for almost five years now. And when I say serious, I mean reading madmen like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Kafka, Márquez, Dante, Ghalib, Khalil Gibran, Shakespeare, and many more lunatics.

Now, why am I doing this?
Firstly, I’m bored with life and need something to save my soul (some think I’m depressed).
Secondly, even I have no idea why I’m doing it.

Apart from these reasons, there are moments of sudden bursts of energy when I feel two simultaneous emotions rising within me:
1. To make classics and great literature accessible to everyone in an easy and entertaining manner, to let it explode on a massive level. But this turns out to be a delusion because the masses are not interested in literature—it’s only for a rare breed.
2. To stop making videos altogether or just do it once a month because it’s not at all lucrative. And without any inherent reward, motivation dies out. (Yes, my interest in literature has hit rock bottom over the past 7-8 months.)

Beyond these ramblings, I don’t think literature provides solutions for life. Writers mostly write about pain, and that pain, instead of solving anything, seeps into you and makes you weaker emotionally. Feeling deeply is a curse.

Some say literature makes us feel connected, that it assures us we are not alone. But if you’re depressed and feel connected to a depressed character in a story, over time, you might start enjoying your own state and stop trying to come out of it. Literature is a double-edged sword—it makes you more empathetic, but it also makes you fall in love with your wounds.

Dostoevsky can’t solve your life problems. Your problems and the world around you are different, and only you can solve them (or someone truly well-versed in life experiences). That is, of course, assuming your problems are real and not just delusions—some people keep inventing problems just to avoid getting bored.

Should you read literature?

If you want to understand the complexity of human nature and enjoy stories, then definitely. It will elevate your perspective. But every new perspective is like a heavy stone—it becomes another burden on the mind.

What’s the purpose of writing this post?

I’m looking for ways to reignite my passion, as my motivation is drowning with every passing day.
I also have doubts about the relevance of literature in today’s world, where we are obsessed with science, technology, and finance.

To continue telling interesting stories, I need a plan to make it profitable and sustainable—so that I can drink the ocean, extract the salt, and serve the fresh water mixed with honey to my audience.

You might say that I keep ranting every few months, but the truth is, I want to keep this alive. And to keep it alive, it needs bread—and sometimes butter too.

I am constantly thinking about how this can be turned into something long-term, lucrative, and sustainable so that my soul finds nourishment to create again.

As of now, I have no idea in which direction the tides will turn. Hopefully, they will calm, and the sea will resume its course. Otherwise, it might turn into a tempest and swallow my fire.

Realism) .

Thanks …& few lines -
