Today's post is doubling not only as a very rare picture of Paul, but also a spotlight on an amazing woman for Black History Month! This picture is Paul along with Lucile A. Watts, whom was the first black woman to be elected as a circuit court judge in Michigan. This picture was taken at Paul's place of business, "Celebrity House West" in May of 1969.
Ms. Watts was recruited by Great Lakes Mutual Insurance Company to assist with the release of black men arrested during the 1967 Detroit riot. She joined other African-American lawyers in the community to organize and coordinate in defending the men and seeking their release She also served as a board member at Focus: HOPE for 20 years, Woodward Academy, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, a lifetime member of the NAACP, and a National Honorary Member of Distinction of the Gamma Phi Delta Sorority.
Happy Valentine's Day! Today im sharing a very RARE picture of Paul standing outside of his barber shop that was located in his beauty complex Celebrity House West in Detroit in 1969.
I'll be sharing more rare pictures soon, including more from his place of business!
I hope today, everyone feels love from someone special or even for yourself. If its one thing I've learned from Paul after all these years of studying him, is he had such a love for people from all walks of life, colors, religion, social standing and creeds. We can all live like Paul and get a little better at this thing called life!
Today I'm sharing a rare picture of The Tempts (minus Otis who was sick this day) along with their opener, Motown singer, the beautiful Blinky Williams. This picture was taken at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis ahead if their record breaking sold out show on March 16, 1969 at the Kiel Auditorium.
This press event was for Prom Magazine and in it's attendance was St. Louis area teenagers who won the chance to meet The Tempts and ask questions and take pictures.
Pictured L-R: Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards, Paul Williams, Blinky Williams and Melvin Franklin.
Today im sharing one of my favorite pictures of Paul. This was in July of 1967, just after he turned 28. It was taken at Steel Pier in Atlantic City on the boardwalk.
I iften wonder what kind of pictures he took with his camera. Was it pictures of people like his brother Temptations? People at the boardwalk? Pictures of the seaside? Maybe a mix? I'd love to see life from his point of view behind the camera!
Today im sharing a cute picture of Paul along with some young fans at Steel Pier in Atlantic City in July of 1967. Here he is showing the kids how to play the shooting game on the midway.
This picture is so great. It shows Paul's love for his fans, however young they were. He especially loved mentoring and meeting with youth. He was known to tell them to stay in school and get an education. And Paul's motto to everyone was "Stay Sharp!"
Today I'm doing a sister post to @temptin_temptationspost he did earlier! These are more pictures taken at Fisher Theater in Detroit in early 1966.
I've always loved these pictures because they look so dapper and suave in their suits and top hats. Pictures like this is the reason they were called "The Tall, Tan, Temptin' Temptations."
Happy Motown Monday! Today I am bringing you a little love from Marvin Gaye to Paul Williams shortly after Paul's passing.
In the 1974 article, Marvin says of Paul, "Paul Williams was a great guy. He helped me out with a lot of staging back in the early days." He continues, "You know his own group was trying to cut a hit yet Paul was everywhere helping everyone. When we lost him we lost a true gentleman and singer."
Thank you Marvin for showing Paul such kindness and respect. We miss both of you!
Today I have a very rare picture to share with you all. For years I've known about this event at Small's in Harlem and even found a photo sheet of it with tiny pictures that you can't make out. I researched for a long time with no leads on this event. I was beginning to think it was a figment of my imagination! Well I finally found a clear picture of it! I rejoiced!
This small event was honoring Motown and The Temptations on February 24, 1969.
L-R pictured: Weldon MacDougal (Motown promotions manager), Chuck Jackson (one of my favorites), Tony Lawrence, John Shabaz and Paul Williams!
I hope everyone has a great weekend! And as Paul says in this song, "Friday the eagle flies and so do I!"
