Lyra's Letters

Q and A:

Hi guys, thanks so much for the support and kind words on my last post. I reached out to YouTube, and they confirmed there are no restrictions on my channel. Hopefully, this is just a temporary slump.

I’m not going anywhere or stopping with the shorts, but I will be experiment a bit with my videos to see how the algorithm responds.

I am, however, considering branching into long-form content, as some of you suggested. Maybe it’s time to move beyond shorts.

For my first long-form video, I’d love to do a Q&A so you can get to know me better, and I can get more comfortable with the process of videomaking.

Feel free to drop any questions in the comments, and I’ll try to answer as many as I can in the video.

Lyra's Letters

A Quick Question for You All:

Are you guys seeing my videos in the algorithm?

Because everything I’ve been putting out in February has really been underperforming in a way I’ve never seen before, and it’s been stressing me out.

If you are seeing my videos, are you just not liking the topics I’m talking about? Do you find them boring or annoying? Do you not like the music choices?

Would you guys like to see more paintings, history, or archaeology?

I’m really sorry if this sounds weird, but I just wanted to go to you all directly to see if there’s something I might need to improve.

Thank you so much for any feedback you’re able to give, I’d really appreciate it.

Happy Channel Anniversary!

It's been almost a year since I started posting on this channel. What started as a hobby has grown into a community I never could have imagined having.

To be frank, the past few months have been really rocky for me. It's only now that I'm starting to find stable footing in my life again. I'm truly grateful for your patience during this time.

I'm working on getting my upload schedule consistent again. I have a lot of plans and ideas for the next year of this channel, although I'm still unsure of when and how I'll implement them.

I'm excited, if a bit scared, about what this new chapter will bring but I'm glad to be along for the ride.

Thank you all for your support. I wouldn't be here without it.

With love,
Lyra

About the “Ghost Girl” Sculpture

I’m posting this preemptively because I’ve already received a few accusations of copying/stealing from another creator’s video… which is incorrect. (Proof is in the pictures attached to this post.)

Yesterday, I released a short about the sculpture “Ghost Girl" by Kevin Francis Grey. It’s doing pretty well, which I’m proud of, but it turns out another creator also released a video on the same sculpture yesterday. This is where the accusations of copying are coming from.

To clarify how I work: I write and prepare videos one to two weeks in advance, rather than making them day-to-day. This gives me flexibility in case I get sick, something unexpected happens, or I simply feel uninspired.

I had the analysis of “Ghost Girl" written since August 7th, though I made a few small wording tweaks before putting the video together on the 11th.

Unless I had a time machine, there’s no way I could have copied the other creator. I also doubt they copied me, as when I checked their video, it already had comments that were a couple of hours older than the scheduled publish time of mine.

In short, this seems to be nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence.

Lyra's Letters

I typically don't bother to mention content theft because it happens so often, but this channel really pisses me off.

A few months ago, they started directly ripping videos from my page and posting them without credit. One of them being an analysis on the painting "Young Woman with Servant" by Stephen Slaughter. They only added my handle after I commented asking why they stole my videos.

Whatever... I decided to let it slide. I wasn't in the mood to fill out a Video Removal Request and hand over my address and full legal name to this person.

Then I found out they had reposted the same video again two weeks ago… again without credit. This time, they even watermarked my video with their channel name.

It's really infuriating. Especially because I can tell they've done this to other creators well, watermarking their content without a lick of credit.

I'm not making this post because I want any of you to go attack this person. I just wanted to vent/bring attention to this because it's a recurring issue within this niche.

It seems like I was the primary target, but below are just some of the creator's whose work I recognized on the thief's page. I'd recommend checking them out if you like my content as they cover similar topics. They might not have gotten credit where it was deserved, but at least I can try to give them some here:

Edit: It's fixed now.

You just... gotta love YouTube.

I put out a video today detailing an example of a young woman being trained for a sit-in. It showed instructors blowing smoke in her face, pulling her hair, and tapping cigarette ashes on her. All things protesters had to endure from white people during sit-ins. The video also included pictures from the Greensboro sit-in and a sit-in conducted by two Black students from Saint Augustine’s College.

And it got age-restricted through a manual review.

Why?

Because it "sexualized minors." There was nothing sexual in the video. None of the people in the photos were children. Most of the participants in the first sit-ins were college students.

I've submitted an appeal to YouTube. I'll keep you all updated on the final verdict.
