Kathryn's World - Wildfire Tracking

Hello Friends,
I'm sorry - wanted to do a video update. (Dental numbness though still.)
I'm dealing with back to back crisis of friends, loved ones, and their own, loved ones. I lost a close friend to death. Others are ailing.

I usually begin summer fire stream around mid July...I delayed updating you all, hoping I could announce something good. Like "I can begin in Aug." I don't want people to worry, or worse, to be depressing...

But it's becoming clear I cannot stream this summer fire season.
Due to family and friend dire emergencies, I'm caregiving right now. I'm not sure how long this will last.
It's exhausting but I'm holding strong. And, seeking help.

I needed to update sooner, I hope you forgive. I can do an update stream soon, if I can get dust to settle.

I appreciate your support so much and can't express my gratitude. I have not gone through a challenge like this before.

What we are able to do together is very important for the public. Working hard to return.

My thoughts and prayers for those taking losses now. We must demand policy reform. We citizens organizing, is not enough.

I'm sorry friends, I'm still sick as a dog. Not sure when I can go live again. I knew a 19-hour stream while I was getting sick wasn't good for my health - but it was important to be ready to cover that monster Border 2 Fire in San Diego County, should it have escalated. It exhibited extreme fire behavior at night before. Nighttime - is sometimes when we best serve the public, simply because the official hotlines end at 8pm, and the media goes to sleep. We, and Watch Duty, are the only ones providing the public with reliable information most nights!

It is with a heavy heart I report - I hate being right. Confirmed by ABC7 this morning - the official evacuation notification system FAILED UTTERLY during the Eaton. Texts / calls went out to people after the neighborhoods were already burning, and people were likely already dead.
I am proud, and also bitter - that myself, our team of mods / helpers, were there to tell people TO GO, check on neighbors, start up the citizen notification system (call your friends!) and help guide people through the crisis.
I have you my viewers, subscribers, and donors to thank. I am so bitter though, WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THE GOVERNMENT'S JOB!?

I have been saying since 2020 when I started all this - CALIFORNIA'S OFFICIAL EVACUATION NOTIFICATION SYSTEM IS BROKEN. It failed in 2017 when my family friend died in the North Bay Fires, a year later when 85 died in Paradise, and nearly my brother - in 2020 when Brush / Berry Creek burned down. Hawaii's system failed Lahaina, and now, California's STILL BROKEN SYSTEM has resulted in yet another mass-death fire event.

High wildfire death tolls ARE NOT NORMAL. Fewer people died in the 1920's, and that was an era before television!!
I don't know about you, but I'm sick of this bull crap. ABC7 glossed over this report, but we all should be MAD AS HELL AND NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! We need to pressure officials to get their crap together!
The death toll from failure to warn the public in time is now in the hundreds in California. How many more have to die before officials FIGURE OUT HOW TO SEND A TEXT!!!??? Push for Change, California - or you will see more of the SAME!

I'm taking the day off to sleep and rest my voice. It was a blessedly-uneventful night shift.
Winds will pick up again Mon. Must be rested.
By the way - there is a Fake CNN news channel, on YouTube run by some people in India. This channel is scaring people to death, with a fake live stream. Right now. 7:45am. The headline is NEW FIRE IN HOLLYWOOD HILLS - and, well, that was 3 days ago. They are showing footage from then, as if it's happening now.
700,000 people are watching, and mostly, thinking this is real. It is up to you, the viewer - to press the REPORT button on any fake news channels that fear-monger. REPORT them, for "Misinformation," if you ever feel a channel is providing such. It is NOT COOL to scare fire victims like this. YouTube's algorithm is broken. Channels like mine struggle to get 10k subscribers, because we're not featured. Our life-saving information - is not featured. This crap is. The fake news. Good Job YouTube. Good job.

I'm sorry I won't be doing the promised "midnight stream."
Like I said yesterday, it's more important we stream at night, when most media / officials are offline.
But, after speaking with a broken tooth (before & after seeing the dentist) for 26 hours straight - I need a break. My voice is shot, and I chewed / cut up my cheek something awful.
I'm listening to / monitoring the radio. Will go live if there's a new fire or evacuation crisis tonight.
Thank you for your patience. You know me. Only injury or illness can take me away from such an...event.
Praying for you all. <3

Hello Friends,
I'm sorry I won't be doing a New Years Stream. I've witnessed a violent crime, specifically, an attempted murder. I am ok, myself. I do not know those involved. But I haven't been sleeping well since.
I am just not in a "festive" mood, I hope you understand. This caused one of the worst Christmas' of my life.
2024's ending is quite the bummer.
I wish, for all of us, a safe and happier new year.

I've been attentively watching (with sorrow) the coverage of the Korean Jeju Air 737 crash, and I actually have something to say about it.
I may make a video explaining my theory.
"Oh but we shouldn't speculate yet until-" Yes we should. Nothing is wrong with speculation, only pretending to "know," and judging, is wrong. Speculation about safety issues that concern us all is healthy, and leads to good discussions on improving safety. Especially if we compare similar incidents of the past, and how to prevent future disasters.
(And I believe this crash is history repeating.)

I'm not qualified to comment about anything aviation - except for one thing.
The one thing that may explain all of the behavior of the crew - is fire.

Nobody, not the media - is talking about fire. But, if you think your plane is on fire, or need to shut down an engine because of fire risk; many puzzling decisions become understandable, and sadly, even commendable.

Please see these two fellas, Blancolirio and Pilot Blog channels. They know their stuff.
From them, I've cultivated my own theory.

Yes bird strike can cause an engine fire - due to damaged engine parts rattling around / detaching.
Birds tend to flock, so birds may have struck both.
Engine fire lights can come on, also, smoke can fill the cockpit, or cabin.
Mere seconds are all one has to slam the "fire suppression" button and choke fuel off to the engine, else you get a wing on fire, where the fuel is stored.

If you want to read about how pilots can mistakenly turn off the wrong engine, due to smoke in the cockpit, of a 737, read here about the Kegworth Air Disaster. This could be a bit of history repeating.

By cutting off the functions of the "good" engine, they may have assumed was aflame, and not knowing the "bad" one has no hydraulics, they could leave their plane crippled, with no way to slow down. (And not know it until they pushed the buttons on approach - only to have nothing respond. The R engine controls gear down - it's probably one of the buttons they pushed, that did nothing.)
RIP victims.

Hello Friends,
I monitored the Canyon Crest fire, since I returned home at 10pm. It's 5am now...time to pass out.
I hope it will be ok. I stayed up also, wondering what the fire was on cams, that Watch Duty never picked up.
It was on "Oregon 2 Cam" by Brush / Berry Creek. (The towns devastated / erased by the Bear fire of 2020.)
I do wish the actual Alert Cams websites would actually tell us what the heck we're looking at! Really ez to set that up. Sometimes, they just monitor burn piles. But they can freak us out! Alas.

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving!
For those of you who have donated / done well-wishes while I recover from surgery - thank you!
It's been very painful, difficult, and expensive to be mostly bedridden this long.
I've been ordering a lot of delivered comfort food.

I was well enough to go to Seaprobe's for Thanksgiving dinner with Spyman too. But, I forgot to take pictures.
I still can't stream. Just when I think I'm going back to normal, all it takes is leaning over, say to pick up a pencil, or milk from the bottom of the fridge - forgetting I'm not supposed to, and something breaks in my face.
What happens next you don't want me to describe.

I seemed to be getting so much stronger, but, that sent me into a panic. I'll be calling the doc today.

I'm supposed to be back in California by now. I was supposed to drive John Stoker, who took care of me, on the 24th. He got a train ticket instead. I was too weak. I have a 4-6 week recovery expectation. It was worse in my face than the surgeon expected.

I have a tentative plan to take the train to Sacramento on the 4th for a family reunion. I hope to see my Dad, and so many others. But likely, I won't stay long. I'm really messed up I'm afraid.
I've lost a lot of blood, and some weight. It will just take...as long as it takes.

I am strong enough to set up stream in an emergency however. My heart is still sick over the Mountain Fire.
I'm upset, youtube made me look like a callous idiot - because it hid the video from the public, when I explained I had to return to Oregon for surgery, and I was puking my guts out from food poisoning when the Mountain Fire started.

I wondered - why is my phone silent? Why is almost nobody wishing me a good recovery? I even got snide remarks lately - and couldn't understand. Well, turns out YouTube hid my video I recorded at Penny's Diner on my way back North.
I did NOT screw up the settings. I check on how many people saw it, as today is one of the first days going back on the computer - OMG NOBODY SAW IT! YouTube made it "private."

Well. Here it is.
Remember, I created this on Nov 7th. I will always regret being food poisoned, and rushing back to Oregon for surgery when that broke out. You know - I was ready every-single-day of my California BUT the day it broke out, to stream. Some days, the Devil wins.

Hello friends,
Surgery update:

Yesterday, I had what I thought were small "nasal nipples" removed from my face, in-clinic.
(Ya know, baby bottle nipples.)

They were in place to stop post-surgical hemorrhaging, with small breathing holes.

I thought they were like cups.

Had no idea long scissor-like instruments were required to cut sutures that held them in place...with forceps required for extraction.

They were huge! 2" long!

No wonder my face was so swollen and hurt so much.

I have pics - but they're way too gory to share, as I bled profusely.

I have a suspected clotting disorder, have had tests, but, none they can identify.

The good news:

I'm breathing better today than I have in years...in the few hours that Afrin actually works, before the drippage returns.

So - the surgery seems to be a great success!

The Bad News:

My surgery was more... elaborate than usual.

Once the surgeon was in there, a cyst / abscess was removed from my left side above my teeth.

He packed the cavity with clear gel, which was also suction-removed yesterday.

It was not "clear," anymore.

I have no aversion to blood - but what has...emerged from my face over the last week has been nothing short of shocking.

There is surgery...and then there's battlefield surgery.

That's all the details I'll provide.

My face has gone from greusome, to horrifying, to merely disturbing.

I'm still in no state to stream - I'm weakened from anemia, and nausea.

One sneeze, and I could scar your mind for life! ☺️

So, you'll have to wait a bit longer friends.
My apologies.

Meanwhile, I'll try and post some shorts of my adventures.

I'll try and take care of myself, and heal up fast.

Special thanks to my Dad for the support, my Ma, and the mods John Stoker and Seaprobe, for cooking and nursing me back to health.

And all of you for your kind support. ❤️

Forever Grateful 🌻
