After 30 documentaries about Ancient Rome, most of them on an academic scale, I want to expand and do something a bit different...

Vikings!

From the raid on Lindisfarne in 793 to the Norman Conquest in 1066. How Scandinavian farmers became the most feared warriors in medieval Europe. How they settled England, founded Normandy, reached North America, and established trade routes stretching from Baghdad to the Atlantic. And how they eventually stopped being Vikings and became Europeans.
I thought about making 4 episodes but no. One big premiere instead....The complete history of the Norse Age coming soon

QUIZ OF THE WEEK:

Julius Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon in 49 BCE marked a decisive moment in Roman history. By Roman law, no general was allowed to bring an army across this boundary, as it was seen as a declaration of war against the Senate and the Republic.

Caesar’s decision to cross the Rubicon with his army was illegal and a direct challenge to the authority of the Roman Senate. This act led to the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, who was aligned with the Senate.

Caesar’s famous words, “Alea iacta est” (The die is cast), signify his understanding that the moment was irreversible, and that war was inevitable.

The phrase “crossing the Rubicon” has since become a metaphor for taking an irreversible step, one that leads to consequences that cannot be undone.

This event ultimately contributed to the collapse of the Roman Republic, paving the way for Caesar's dictatorship. However, the formal establishment of the Roman Empire would come after Caesar’s assassination, under his heir Augustus.

Question: What was the Rubicon?

Hey everyone! :)

Rebranding the channel to "History by Johan."
The old name never felt right. This is more personal and authentic. It's my take on history, my perspective on these stories from the past.
I'll be trying a new angle but keeping the same historical accuracy you expect.
Everything else stays the same. Same content quality, same approach.

Hey everyone!

Im so excited to finally share this with you. Ive been working on this two part documentary series about sexuality in Ancient Rome for several weeks now and honestly the editing process nearly killed me. I spent so many late nights going through sources, fact checking everything, making sure every single detail was historically accurate because I wanted this to be something really special, some visuals are from other places but non the less from ancient rome, for example, narrations regarding a brothel I have some tunnels thats not at all linked with the brothels but I wanted to give you all something different then just a slow zoom on a grass field where a brothel once was.

The research alone was intense but then the editing just took forever. I wanted to get the pacing right, make sure the visuals matched the narration and well, its the best I could do, and create something that feels like a real documentary. This is probably the most effort I've ever put into a project and I really hope it shows. Even that this was around a 20 minutes documentary done in two parts there is ALOT of work to be done.

Part one was done yesterday and is out now and part two will be released in a few hours. This series covers how Ancient Romans actually thought about sexuality and desire, which is completely different from anything we understand today. Emperors marrying men in public ceremonies, love stories that shook empires, and how Christianity completely transformed sexual law from acceptance to execution.
It's fascinating and honestly kind of mind blowing when you realize how different their world was from ours.

I really hope you guys enjoy watching this as much as I enjoyed making it. If you do, please like, comment, and share it around. Your support means everything and it's what keeps me going on these massive projects. Can't wait to hear what you all think!

We’ve been on a short break, but we’re back with a new full audio documentary: “Rome and the Sea.”

This episode explores how Rome went from a land power with no naval tradition to controlling the Mediterranean from the Punic wars against Carthage, through the age of piracy, to the Battle of Actium and the rise of the imperial fleets.

Thank you for your patience, and thank you for your support! :)
