Tribe meets white man for the first time in Papua New Guinea

In 1976, Belgian writer, traveler, social activist and film director Jean-Pierre Dutilleux went to the east of Papua New Guinea, to the Morobe province. There, in the impenetrable mountain jungles, he claimed to be the first European to come across representatives of the Angu tribe, known among neighboring tribes for their militancy. From this expedition, Dutilleux brought back a large amount of video footage, including footage of his first encounter with an Angu band. Although small expeditions had explored Angu lands at least six times before Dutilleux, his claim that these particular Angu had not seen any Europeans may be true. However, some anthropologists have raised doubts about the veracity of the footage. In response to the criticisms, Dutilleux once said: “If the Anguas were actors, we should give them the César Award for such acting.”
