February 12, 1899 A monster blizzard slammed the Northeast, burying Cape May under a ridiculous 30+ inches of snow while the thermometer plunged to record-shattering cold. Travel? Totally paralyzed. Coal supplies? Vanished faster than free samples at a bakery. Dozens met their end from the brutal freeze and its attendant hardships. One of New Jersey’s most unhinged winter tantrums ever.
February 11, 1938 On what would’ve been Thomas Edison’s 91st birthday, they threw a big shiny dedication for a big shiny tower in his honor right at the spot of his legendary Menlo Park lab, birthplace of the incandescent light bulb (before LEDs) and the phonograph (before Spotify). The “Wizard of Menlo Park” got his very own stone spotlight and basically adopted New Jersey as his innovation playground. Tower erected, wizard memorialized, and New Jersey still bragging.
February 10, 1870 The state legislature went full serious-mode and birthed the New Jersey State Board of Agriculture—because farmers needed (and frankly deserved) an official cheering section. The goal? Pump up farming know-how, throw better county fairs, spread some book-learnin’, and keep the Garden State’s wallet green… even while smokestacks started popping up everywhere else.
Basically: “We’re industrializing over here… but also please don’t let the tomatoes die. Thanks.”

As I close out my first year on YT, it's time to reflect on how far the channel has come since Jalopy Patrol and my first foray into Garden State history with the Jersey Devil video. I'm deeply thankful to everyone who has visited and shown an interest and while my channel is small, I hope folks will continue to find their way here and get something out of it.
And the winner of 2024 is *drumroll* the Mt. Holly Witch Trials... interestingly enough, tangentially related to the Jersey Devil by way of Benjamin Franklin; the founder who bought a newspaper to troll Titan Leeds.
Captain Harvey Goukler, of the Edwin H Berke, was arrested by the Coast Guard for smuggling whiskey into Atlantic City. This ruffled some feathers among the Feds, who opined that he couldn’t be held without going through the formality of obtaining a warrant and being indicted by Federal Marshals.
This would represent the last time the Feds would worry themselves over such details…
