Guy sitting next to me at a coffee shop was watching YouTube.

Noticed he kept replaying the same 30 seconds.

Couldn’t help myself.

“Are you learning English?”

“Yeah.”

“What level are you?”

“Not sure. I just want to speak better.”

“How long have you been studying?”

“Two years.”

“Do you take classes?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“I read short stories and shadow them.”

“Like novels?”

“No. Boring.”

“Then what?”

“300-word stories about daily life.”

“Where do you get them?”

“I write my own.”

“You write your own materials?”

“Yeah. Stuff I actually want to say.”

“Does it work?”

“I can hold conversations now.”

He put his headphones back on.

I realised something.

Most learners aren’t lazy.

They’re using materials made for classrooms.

Not for real life.

No wonder progress feels slow.
