💀As a nationally certified hospice nurse, I am passionate about end-of-life advocacy, education and normalization of death.

💀 Death is sad but it doesn’t need to be scary. In my 17+ years of being a hospice nurse, I have learned that knowing what to expect when a person is dying can make this human experience much less frightening.

💀Am I a compassionate human? Absolutely. Am I funny as hell? Also yes. Dark humor is my jam, if that’s not for you watch at your own risk and don’t say I didn’t warn you! If you want to learn all about death and dying from a subject matter expert, the universe has brought you to the right place!

💀Join me as I lighten up the dark and taboo topic of death and make it a little easier to get in the conversation. #normalizedeath Because death is normal.

Taking care of a sick or dying person is extremely difficult emotionally and physically and caregivers can not only burn out, they often become sick themselves.
If you know someone that is in that position and you want to help there are so many things that you can offer to do that will make their life easier.
✨Do a load of laundry 🧦
✨Bring a bag of groceries 🛍
✨Sit with the ‘patient’ for an hour or two 🪑
✨Pick up a prescription 💊
✨ Make phone calls to update other friends and family ☎️
✨Deliver a meal and make it breakfast or lunch instead of dinner (The casseroles always seem to be in an endless supply so think out of the box!)🍳
✨ Wash some dishes 🍶
✨Do some light housekeeping 🧹
✨ Gas up their car 🚗
✨ Mow their lawn 🚜
✨ Do a night shift so they can get some rest 😴
And if YOU are the caregiver don’t hesitate to ask for what you need and always say yes when help is offered ♥️❤️

✨Randall Champion accidentally touched a high-voltage line, electrifying himself and stopping his heart. A fellow linemen J.D. Thompson performed mouth-to-mouth CPR until paramedics arrived. Champion survived. This famous photo is known as "The Kiss of Life." (1967).
✨This type of situation is when it is appropriate for someone to get CPR. But never on a hospice patient!
✨ Whenever I post anything talking about how hospice patients shouldn’t be a full code status, many people commented that they thought going on hospice meant an automatic DNR. It does not.
✨Medicare regulations do not allow us to refuse a hospice admission to anyone based on the code status.
✨Do we like that? Hell no! We don’t want to do an intervention on somebody that will almost certainly cause them harm and cause trauma to the family.
✨But the reality is, most people choose to be a full code, because they are not informed of the risks of CPR, especially on a fragile, dying person.
✨Most often they are not informed because non-hospice or non palliative healthcare providers are uncomfortable having those conversations. But we aren’t and a lack of knowledge shouldn’t prevent someone from benefiting from hospice care.
✨So we do our best to provide the needed education and try to get them where they need to be. And we’re good at it! In the almost 18 years I’ve worked in hospice, I’ve never had to perform CPR on a single person nor have I heard about any of my colleagues having to.
