How does "Save Europe" differ from other books on the spiritual condition of Europe or other books on world mission in general?
1. It clarifies that the general decline of faith in Europe does not mean that Christianity has failed. It just means that the system that once worked in the past does not work anymore. In the past, Europeans presumed themselves to be Christians because of birth, but now they realize that a genuine personal conversion is required to be a Christian. Churches can no longer assume that people will come to church because churches exist, but they must be fishers of men, persuading each person of the reason to go to church. This is a change for the better.
2. The decline of church attendance occurred in the west because both the churches and the public had a wrong understanding of Christianity. Churches didn’t know how to respond appropriately to the rapid cultural changes, and the people thought that the only choice available to the modern man was to leave churches. Both churches and the public ignored there was much room in Jesus Christ to accommodate the freedom and autonomy that modern man sought. The modern age has made it necessary for Christians to rethink the freedom afforded by the grace of Christ. Christianity will be more mature in the process. This point is a unique contribution that this book makes.
3. This book compares the difference between western Europe and the United States during the same period. It concludes that the Christian faith was able to survive and prosper in the U.S. while it dwindled in Europe because churches in America competed with secularism and with one another in the marketplace of ideas. Those churches that met people's spiritual needs the best prospered while those that couldn't declined. Sociologists had discovered this fact before theologians did. In the end, the reason for the spiritual decline in the west was simple and obvious.
4. This book draws a critical insight from the Bible that even sacred work sometimes needs to be repeated to be complete. The first attempt is not always successful. Many men of faith in the Bible had to repeat themselves to make it work. Jesus had to repeat laying hands on the blind man to heal him completely. We should not hesitate, therefore, to reintroduce the gospel to Europe. From the macro perspective, humanity's future may be much longer than we can imagine, and God may still have many more plans in store for mankind.
5. This book proposes a more mature and logical development of ethical values from the teachings and spirit of Jesus, which does not conflict with the reality of modernity as much as people have thought. As humanity becomes more mature, it will understand and accept those aspects of the kingdom ethic that is more inclusive than people had thought. It does not mean the liberalization of theology but getting closer to the truth of the gospel.
