Biblical Studies and Reviews, Stephen Hackett

Hello! I’m Stephen Hackett and the goal of this channel is to enrich your study of the scriptures by sharing things I’m learning as I study the scriptures and providing reviews of books and resources to help deepen your study.

The battle cry of the Reformation was “ad fontes” —to the fountains—and returning to the fountain of the scriptures is something I strive to do on this channel.

What if we set modern science aside for a moment… and just read Genesis on its own terms?

I went back to the earliest Jewish interpreters and Church Fathers — not blogs, not secondary sources — but the primary texts themselves.

What I found surprised me.

Full video coming.

I want to take a moment to say how much I genuinely love and appreciate those of you on this channel who hold to old-earth views.

A lot of my content is driven by what I feel drawn to explore in the moment. I follow the questions that seem most pressing or interesting to me, and right now that has included quite a few creation-related topics. But Lord willing, I hope to make many more videos on the Septuagint and other areas as well.

My deepest passion, though, isn’t really tied to any one modern debate. It’s the recovery of the ancient faith — calling us back to truths that were once widely assumed and taught by the apostles and the earliest generations of the Church. I care deeply about what the first few centuries of Christians believed, how they read Scripture, and how their worldview shaped theology long before our modern categories existed.

For that reason, I don’t see young-earth vs old-earth as a first-level doctrine that Christians should divide over. Faith in Christ, the authority of Scripture, the gospel — those are the hills worth dying on. Many godly, thoughtful believers land in different places on the age of the earth, and I have real respect for that.

That said, there is a theological trajectory that concerns me at times. I believe Adam was a real, historical person, and that humanity is grounded in a real act of divine creation. Some versions of old-earth thinking go further than I’m comfortable with and begin to blur or even deny special creation altogether. When that happens, it’s no longer just about timelines — it starts to touch deeper questions about sin, the fall, and the way the New Testament understands human origins.

So my goal here is not to draw lines in the sand or create camps. It’s to think carefully, charitably, and historically about these issues — always trying to let Scripture and the faith of the early Church shape the conversation more than modern pressures.

If you’re old-earth and you’re here, I’m really glad you are. This channel isn’t about gatekeeping — it’s about learning together, sharpening one another, and pursuing truth with humility.

I have a short 5 minute video coming out. It’s about how one word in the Septuagint altered the course of history. Can you type in the comments on that video “Digging Deep” if you make it to the end?

📘 Greek New Testament: Byzantine Textform 2026

We’re working toward releasing a public-domain, Smyth-sewn, wide-margin Greek New Testament following the Robinson–Pierpont Byzantine text, with a comparative apparatus against 11 printed editions—designed for serious study and long-term use.

Before opening preorders or fundraising, we want to confirm that the interest is truly there. Based on current quotes, the price should be around $20 plus shipping (possibly a bit lower).

👉 If you’re likely to purchase a copy, please add your name here:
mailchi.mp/b3f88705ab9f/greek-new-testament-projec…

Signing up does not commit you to anything. It simply helps us determine whether printing 1,000 copies is realistic. You’ll only receive updates related to this project, and sign-ups will receive first opportunity to order when we move forward.

Thank you for helping us bring a high-quality Byzantine Greek New Testament into print—for the benefit of all.
