Canadian humpback whales thrive (with a little help from friends) 🐋
In a fjord system in northern Canada, humpback whales are bouncing back after almost being wiped out by whaling. Their secret weapon? A smart hunting trick called bubble-net feeding. A few whales start blowing bubbles in circles while others make loud calls, together they trap whole schools of herring in a bubble “net.” Then: big synchronized gulp. And their dinner is served. What’s especially cool: scientists followed this population for about 20 years and saw that the technique spreads socially. A few “expert” whales pass it on, and the rest learn by copying. Thanks to that teamwork, the population is now growing by around 6–8% every year and has grown to over 500 whales. So in this case teamwork literally makes the dream work!

Did you know that spiders’ ability to spin webs may be one consequence of a genetic error? 🕷️🕸️🧬
A close look at the genetics and development of spinnerets (=spiders’ silk-making organs) reveals that an early arachnid doubled all of its DNA hundreds of millions of years ago. The new findings published in Science Advances, suggest key, the doubled genes were responsible for the evolution of spinnerets. 🔗 Source: www.sciencenews.org/article/spider-silk-making-org…

Polar bears are in a better physical shape than scientists expected 🐻❄️🙌🏽
Polar bears are in better physical health than they were 25 years ago, despite the decrease in sea ice, reveals new research. The well-being of the iconic white mammals living around the Norwegian island of Svalbard has improved in the face of climate change, likely due to better opportunities to hunt. The scientists were ‘surprised’ that the bears’ fat reserves have increased since the year 2000, even while sea ice levels decreased. 🔗 Study: www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-33227-9

Conservationists in Thailand just released four endangered Indo-Pacific leopard sharks back into wild waters to help rebuild their populations after years of decline from overfishing and habitat loss. The sharks (Maiton 🦈, Hope 🦈, Spot 🦈 & Toty 🦈) were raised and trained to survive in the sea before their big release. Happy release day, guys! 🔗 More: www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/thai…
