Some Dude On YouTube

Yeah, it was just a matter of time.

YouTube continues on it's way to make the desktop browser experience as worse as possible. Up until yesterday when looking at your subscription feed you would get the option to have tiles or a plain list of video releases by all the channels you are subscribed to. Easy to navigate and see where you left last time and who did what new stuff. Worked great!

That choice is gone. On a 1080p monitor with Firefox you now have 9 tiles of the latest subscribed channels then bloody shorts before it continues with subscribed channels.

If you, like me, follow a lot of channels this is cluttered to the n-th degree. I dread to think how that looks for people that don't use an ad blocker.

God, what a sh*t show. Need to spend some time on plugin research then I guess?

Dear fellow creators in our hobby space: we all know 3D printing isn't going away anymore. I know why some like to use it but I really don't. And I don't want to see it. So please stop titling your videos "easy scratch build" or "cheap and fast terrain" when all you do is pimping a 3D printed piece of plastic or resin. Be honest with the viewers. "How to pimp your 3D print" or "Add flavor to your printed terrain"

And while I'm at it: you, the scratch builders. Terrain is rarely ever free. Even if you use scrap cardboard from cereal boxes or cat food paints and brushes are always an expense. Yes it will be very cheap at times, depending on what paints and brushes you buy but it's never free.

That's my small rant for today. I'll be more positive tomorrow.

At least I will try :)

You know I say that I do not care for numbers. While that is true I also can't help but wonder how other creators rake in subscribers. Just now I checked on a fellow German. He's been doing this only 3 months longer than me, half the amount of videos I have and the view counts are comparable. (Both above 80k). But he has more than double the subscribers. oO Well one thing that he does that I don't: he goes full monty with AI thumbnails, channel trailer and other bits and bobs. That is really disheartening. Well, just needed to get that off my chest. See you next week ;)

Ok, I’m going to cheap out here a bit and will do a carbon copy of my blog here. But I’m really interested in your ideas:

But let’s get down to brass tacks.

When I uploaded the first video to my channel ‘SomeDudeOnYouTube’ on YouTube almost exactly seven years ago (on 18 February 2019), I never would have thought that it would develop into a hobby of its own with weekly streams on Twitch.

Well, now you could say that one of the reasons this happened was because we all had ‘nothing’ to do during the pandemic. At least in terms of our hobbies. Meeting up, playing and chatting just wasn’t possible, and to keep myself from going insane, I started the Hobby Hangout. (my Version of it)

Since I don’t earn my living with all this stuff, but do it just for fun, I am in the fortunate position of not having to chase every trend. I can make shorts or leave them. I can express myself as controversially as I want on topics, because I don’t have to worry that Alphabet/Google will demonetise my and I’ll lose my income.

Admittedly, after more than 280 episodes of Hobby Hangout, I feel like doing ‘something different’ (in the context of the miniature hobby). But I lack inspiration. [The Hobby Hangout will not go anywhere but may change in format a bit? Maybe?]

And so I pose the question into the vast, hopefully not too empty space: What would you like to see on the topic of tabletop wargaming? What is not presented often or intensively enough? What should I focus my attention and camera on?

If you have any ideas, please share them. Otherwise, I’ll have to roll the dice ;)

So I did one of these A|B test on my second to last video from two weeks ago. Used 3 different thumbnails to see what draws the most attention.

Welp, here is the hard truth about being a tiny YouTuber. The result is "Not enough impressions to declare a winner".

Yarp. Not enough people have clicked that video to make any kind of impact. XD

So lady luck smiled upon me and thanks to ‪@OnTableTop‬ and ‪@warlordgames‬ I now own a copy of the #Konflikt47 Starter Set. Since my pile of unpainted stuff is already higher than I am willing to admit and space in my hobby room is at a premium I want to do something with this set. But what? Just give it away? A raffle? Auction it on ebay? Look for a charity that's using it to raise funds? IDK! Let me hear your ideas!
