The C-SUV segment is easily one of the most popular in the country — and for the longest time, it’s been dominated by the Koreans. Space, practicality, tech… they’ve had it all covered. But India’s biggest carmaker was missing from this space. Yes, the Grand Vitara existed — but as a more premium offering sold through the Nexa network, which meant MS Arena didn’t really have a flagship here.
Enter the Victoris.
On paper, the spec sheet looked mind-blowingly good — ADAS, a torque converter automatic, all-wheel drive, hybrid tech and plenty more. At first glance, it all felt like solid value too. The seat comfort, cabin layout and overall sense of space made a great first impression. And living with it? Even better.
The engine, though, isn’t for the enthusiast. It takes its time to gather pace, and being naturally aspirated, you really have to rev it out to get into the powerband. The torque converter gearbox, however, is brilliant — kickdowns are quick and upshifts are almost seamless. Fuel efficiency, on the other hand, wasn’t quite what we’ve come to expect from Maruti. We saw figures ranging from around 9 km/l with spirited driving to about 13 km/l when driven gently.
Driveability is where the Victoris really shines. Whether in the city or on highway runs, it never once felt like a chore. The brakes on our unit felt sharp initially, but progression was well judged. The suspension, though, is genuinely impressive. Broken roads feel like a warm-up, and highways feel almost buttery smooth.
The overall in-cabin experience has been great too. Seat bolstering is spot on, and the driving position is 💯. That said, I would’ve liked a longer seat base, as underthigh support for both the driver and passengers felt a bit lacking.
