OK, OK, I promise I'm not trying to do mental gymnastics to generate some kind of thought leadership post out of a super trend going on right now. Let's just get that out of the way.
Did y'all know that when Stranger Things first hit Netflix, there was barely any marketing or promotions behind it? At least, not what we normally see today: digital ads, press junkets, and everything on screens. They went far more nostalgic with billboards, phone numbers, and even VHS tapes hiding DVDs within.
But once people took a chance and hit play on this random show, it exploded. People weren't just passively telling friends and colleagues to watch it; they proactively texted and called and emailed and posted about this new show that hit them right in the yesteryear feels while telling a fantastic story with compelling characters.
Here's what's been striking me the most about it this week: the Duffer Brothers created something that appeals cross-generationally. I'm a GenXer and the show naturally has a huge appeal to me because I recognize all the settings and trappings of the world I grew up in, but mine wasn't the only age group that felt the show was made for them.
Now comes the part where I can see how this ties into what people in my profession of marketing try to accomplish on a daily basis. (If you prefer to bounce out right now to go watch the new episodes dropping today, by all means do not let me stop you!) But, as a GenXer with 17 years of work in marketing to countless customer personas and target audiences, I can't help but think about how the content IS the thing. If what we create can meaningfully matter to the person we want to see it and do stuff because of it, we've hit Stranger Things levels.
OK, maybe not Joyce-Byers-Christmas-lights-Ouija-board levels, but anything's possible. Yes, even for a GenXer marketer to craft messaging that means something to other generations.
And, dear friends, that's a wrap on my Stranger Things theme attempt at thought leadership. I return you to your regularly scheduled Netflix programming. š
