Oh boy! Vintage gingham, pressed and sorted with the animal blocks. Some from the 1920s, some possibly even earlier because gingham checks are a classic.
It only took one day to decide which fabrics would go with the embroideries, paired together to make up this quilt. Well sixty years and a day to be honest.
I'm going to cut that black and white gingham on the bias and use it for binding. Because if you thought you liked checks, wait until you see the energy it brings when used on the bias grain! 😍😍😍
I've been cleaning up the studios and organizing supplies. I found a stack of embroidery blocks which I have been working on since I was around four years old. My grandmother parsed them out one by one to keep me occupied. The purple hippo was probably the first.
Today at age 63, I finally completed the last of the embroidery. It's an epic of an unfinished object - or UFO as we call them in the quilting world. Sixty years I've chipped away at it. Hauled it around since last century.
And somehow, by some hoarder's miracle, managed to not lose a single block. Didn't soak it with coffee, didn't lose it in the flood, nor during the stint of homelessness. 19 moves. I kept them in the bottom of the embroidery basket, which always went with my sewing machine and somehow the project stayed with me. It tied me to my grandmother, and to the family farm where she taught me to stitch and to knit, to gather hen's eggs and pick cherries. To collect rocks and to cook with bacon grease and to hoard every last scrap like it was still the Great Depression.
Today, I finally finished the last colorful stitch. I wish my grandmother were still here to witness it. I'm feeling glad it's completed. And also regretful that it took six decades.
Here are a few of the blocks, more posts to follow with the COMPLETE and COMPLETED set.
Do you have UFOs? Can you beat 60 years? Tell us in the comments. Because it might take time but you can do it.
