Olu Itori, Oba Akamo Orders Arrest, Detention Of Journalist For Asking Question Over Trending Video

ABEOKUTA – The Olu of Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Fatai Akamo, on Tuesday ordered the police to arrest and detain the PUNCH newspapers correspondent in the state, Bankole Taiwo, for inquiring into the trending video where one Sanni Babatunde Akeem, a physically challenged person, was levelling a land-grabbing allegation against the royal father and another monarch, Oba Kayode Sodimu.

Akeem, walking with crutches in the video, had alleged that Oba Akamo and Sodimu invaded his vast farmland with thugs, beat his workers to stupor, and brought in a caterpillar to clear the land.

The physically challenged man in the four-minute video said, “I am Sanni Babatunde Akeem. It was my workers who called me that some people had invaded my farmland with about 40 thugs and a caterpillar.

“They claimed to have been working for the Olu of Itori, Oba Fatai Akamo, and Oba Kayode Sodimu. They beat my workers and tore their clothes because they said that they were making videos of what they were doing on the farmland.

“They attacked me too and tore my clothes, and this is all I have been operating since 2014. I have fish ponds here likewise piggery, poultry, and where I planted yam among other farming activities.

“I consider this as an attempt to be cheated. So, the Ogun State Government, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and our representatives in government must come to my aid.”

However, having been invited for the press conference to herald the 21st coronation anniversary of the royal father at his palace on Tuesday, the PUNCH correspondent seized the opportunity to ask Oba Akamo for his own side of the story to the viral video.

The journalist disclosed that the royal father who had started telling all that he knew about the viral video all of a sudden became livid when he was asked about the other royal father mentioned in the video.

According to him, Oba Akamo began shouting, “What do you mean? This boy was sent here. Police arrest him and take him to your station.”

Other journalists who were at the event tried to beg the royal father, but he insisted that the police should take the reporter to their station and detain him.

However, after about four minutes of getting to the police station, the police got another call from the palace and took the PUNCH correspondent back to the palace where the police handed over his seized phone to him and ordered that all that he had recorded at the palace be deleted.

Igbo apex group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, demanded an apology and N10 trillion as compensation from President Bola Tinubu to the Igbos after IBB revealed that the 1966 coup was not an Igbo coup.
Following the revelation by former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida during the launch of his book “A Journey in Service” that the 1966 coup was not an Igbo coup as alleged, the Igbo apex group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Sunday demanded an apology and N10 trillion as compensation from President Bola Tinubu to the Igbo.

The group noted that the coup unleashed disastrous repercussions on the Igbo people, among other factors, which ultimately led to the cataclysmic horrors of the Biafra War.

In a statement obtained by The Guardian in Abakaliki, the Deputy National President of the Ohanaeze faction, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, noted that the apology and compensation had become necessary due to the staggering loss of life, with approximately three million Igbo—predominantly innocent women and children—slaughtered during the conflict, an event that continues to reverberate through the collective consciousness of the Igbo people.

Ibrahim Babangida, the former military president, expressed that he wanted MKO Abiola to lead an interim government following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election; however, Abiola declined the offer.

IBB wrote in ‘his Book A Journey in Service’,“At one of my several meetings with Abiola, arranged this time by some traditional leaders, I offered Abiola an interim position pending when we could resolve the situation. Not surprisingly, Abiola turned down my offer.

“How could anyone blame him? Since he was convinced that he had won the elections that the annulment had denied him, it seemed overtly inappropriate to accept an interim arrangement. For him, it was a matter of once bitten, twice shy!

“At another meeting, this time a more private meeting of both families, I articulated that our lives were in danger of being snuffed out by lurking forces that wished both of us ill.

“Unfortunately, Abiola turned his back on rapprochement with me and embraced the gimmicks of deceitful ‘friends’ who hid their real intentions from him. I read somewhere, I believe, in one of Abiola’s newspapers that Abiola thought that the moment these ‘friends’ overthrew me, the elections would be de-annulled and that he would be installed as President by his ‘coup plotting friends.

“As it turned out, Abiola was advised by these same ‘friends’ to leave the country to avoid d€ath threats from fictitious military elements. Abiola’s departure paved the way for his ‘friends’ to consolidate their conspiratorial positions, eventually leading to another military takeover.”

Former military leader, General Ibrahim Babangida, has refuted any involvement in the passing of esteemed journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch, Dele Giwa.

In his autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” Babangida addresses and refutes the longstanding accusations regarding his involvement in Giwa’s d€ath.

He wrote, “The hysteria of the media did not help the investigation of the Giwa murd€r. As is typical of the Nigerian media, the direction was marked by an adversarial attitude towards the government, which had remained the hallmark of the Nigerian media from its colonial heyday.

“It was an attitude of ‘we versus the government’ that has remained today. It is a situation in which the government is adjudged guilty even before the evidence in a case is adduced.

“When the Obasanjo civilian administration reopened the Giwa case at the Oputa Panel on Human and Civil Rights, I expected that the police and lawyers would come forward with new evidence as to their findings on the Giwa murder over the years.

“Nothing of such happened. The Giwa, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved after so many years. I keep hoping it will be uncovered in our lifetime or after us. More often than not, mysterious crimes are solved long after their commission.”
