Is 'Buy and Forget' a myth?

I have heard people and experts debating around this topic but the general consensus is that the strategy of buy and forget is largely a myth especially when it comes to selection of individual blue-chip stocks.

But why 'buy and forget' is considered a myth?

- Changing nature of blue chip companies

The value of Bluechip company is not static. Market dynamics, technological advancements and evolving consumer preferences is a clear indication that the companies considered market leader can lose their prominence or even go out of business.

- Have you heard of survivorship bias?

Many investors often fall prey to this survivorship bias. Which means they will see only those companies for long term investment that have been successful. But they forget about many companies that failed or got delisted.

- One other reason is dynamic business cycles

According to an article published on mint it is seen that the life cycle of companies are shortening and are more suspectible to changing market cycle and competition.

- Periodic review and rebalancing

Even with this buy and hold approach we need to monitor our investments timely so that it aligns with our goals and risk tolerance as the circumstances of our life changes.

So it is important to distinguish 'buy and forget' from 'buy and hold' strategy, which can be a valid approach when implemented thoughtfully.

* What is buy and hold approach?

Buy and hold approach in involves:

- Diversification and asset allocation

A perfect buy and hold means diversifying your investments across stocks, bonds, gold, etc to mitigate risk.

- Long term vision and not blind holding

A true buy and hold strategy involves having a long term vision and we should know why are we investing and understand the power of compounding

- Periodic review and rebalancing

Even with this buy and hold approach periodic monitoring and rebalancing our investments is very important to ensure portfolio remains aligned with the goals and risk tolerance.

So we can conclude that the 'Buy and Forget' might be appealing but the reality is market dynamics, technology and peoples preference changes and so the investment should also change.

Therefore active portfolio management and periodic evaluation is important with the 'Buy and Hold' strategy for a long term successful investment approach.

Don't hesitate to drop down your opinion.

Letโ€™s go back in 2023.

What was the Earning Calls of Ultratech Cement in Q2 .
Earning Calls is the value of sales, expenses, profits and new plans.

Ultratech Cement says that the cement business is not for everyone. It is for those who are very strong at heart.

Cement sector is directly linked to the fundamentals of economy. As India is a fast growing economy the demand for cement will also grow due to overall construction developments like roads, highways, bridges and buildings.

Due to initiation of war between Russia and Ukraine back in the year 2022 the price of fuels like coal petcock surged to 400$ and 260$ respectively. But then in Oct 2023 the price came to normal with a fear of increasing anytime. So stocking up the fuel when the price is low helps in painting the input cost.

If we talk about the maintenance cost then cement industry requires huge maintenance especially during Q2(July-Sept). 24 kilns were shut down for maintenance. And also other major one time expense include paying Rs 40 Crore as a bonus to the employees the reason was 100 million tons sale record the previous year.

What was the price of cement during Q2 (June exit to Sep exit)?
In India the price of cement grew by 7-8% but it grew by average of 1-1.5% in the quarter.

What was the plan to increase the capacity?
Ultratech was trying to achieve new capacity expansion of 24.4 million tonnes which included new capacity expansion of 22.6 million tonnes and addition of 3 slag mills with a capacity of 1.8 million tonnes. The target is to achieve 159.65 million tonnes by June 2025. The vision is to reach 200 million tonnes and the plan was ready and summited to the board.

What about the Capex and Working Capital?
Ultratech did a capex of Rs 2,545 crore in Q2 mainly for the expansion. When the fuel price was low they already stocked up having value of Rs 600 crore. Though the debt figure in Q2 was Rs 4,917 crore there was no problem as everything was running as per the plan.

๐Ÿ”Ž While understanding the Balance Sheet of a company I came across these two terms Current Assets and Current Liabilities.

Let's decode these terms.

๐Ÿ’Ž Current Assets are those which can be converted into cash very easily within a short duration of time ( the term usually set is a year).

They are also termed as liquid, quick or floating assets.

So, what are those that can be termed as current assets.

โžก๏ธ Cash and it's equivalent

โžก๏ธ Inventory kept for the purpose of sale

โžก๏ธ Receivables (Money that is due for the goods sold)

On the other hand..

๐Ÿ’ธ Current Liabilities are those debt that has to be paid off, i.e. outflow of cash or its equivalent from the company in short span of time( the duration is atmost a year).

So Current Liabilities can be classified in broader way under following category:

โžก๏ธ Accounts Payable (Owed money to be paid in the process of doing business)

โžก๏ธ Accounts Expenses (Salary to the employee and other expenses done during the process of business)

โžก๏ธ Income tax Accrued (unpaid portion of the extra profit earned during the year)

โžก๏ธ Bank Loans or Notes Payable ( Money borrowed from the Banks)

โžก๏ธ Dividend Payable (Extra profit sharing to the shareholders)

โžก๏ธ Customer Advanced

โžก๏ธ Customer Deposits

Let's understand Financial Literacy and it's importance

โ‰๏ธ What is financial literacy?

Financial literacy means having the knowledge and understanding of money and financial concepts.

It is basically an understanding of budgeting , saving, investing, and debt management.

A person who is able to understand and manage money is financially literate.

๐Ÿ’ฐ What are the features of financial literacy?

๐Ÿ“ƒ Budgeting:

Budgeting is one of the important parts of understanding money. Budgeting means creating a plan of the way you are going to spend and save your money.
Every person should take charge of their money and plan the savings and expenditure beforehand for proper money management.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Savings:

Saving means the amount of money you keep aside for future use or in case of an emergency.

Savings should be done in a separate savings account. Nowadays it is very easy to open a savings account.
Each and every person should have their savings account.

๐Ÿ’น Investment:

After savings comes the investment part. Investment means you are putting your money in some assets where your money is expected to grow and multiply in future giving you profit. If you are not doing investment you are missing an important chance to earn more money and also the value of your savings gets reduced due to inflation.

๐Ÿ’ต Debts:

Debt means taking others money on loan in order to fullfill your personal requirements. The loan is for a certain duration which has to be paid off after that time period along with the interest. Debt management is one of the important parts of financial literacy.

โ‰๏ธ Why is financial literacy important?

Financial literacy helps us in planning and managing our hard earned money in an efficient way.

A proper money management not only protects your money from getting misused but also helps in compounding it.

If a person is financially literate he is able to recognise any scams and frauds which will help in saving the hard earned money.

It also helps in proper debt management so that you don't get trapped in the debt cycle.

If you are a credit card user it will help in maintaining a good credit score. You will be able to understand how the credit card works and will be able to stay away from the default.

Financial literacy will help in understanding the flow of money to and from the business.

โ‰๏ธ Who should have financial literacy?

Having knowledge of money and basic financial concepts is for everyone who uses money. Even if you are not an earning member, like being a student or a homemaker you should know the money management.

It is easy to learn about money by reading books on finance, financial blogs, post or from YouTube videos.
