Long a popular US airline, due to recent financial difficulties Southwest Airlines made major changes that have alienated some of its loyal customers.

Among the changes the airline made in 2025 was ending popular policies such as "bags fly free," and open seating.

While some argue that Southwest is losing its brand identity - which long differentiated it from other US carriers - the airline launched new interline partnerships with other global carriers including Taiwan-based China Airlines and EVA Air as well as Philippine Airlines.

Now in 2026, Southwest will continue to make major changes. An example is recent reports and talks that the airline is adding its own Premium seating.

As much as Southwest was an inspiration for many budget airlines around the world, its moves are in line with how LCCs have adapted to compete with the bigger airlines.

Still off the high of Philippine Airlines welcoming and operating the first flights using its new A350-1000, the Philippine aviation industry comes into 2026 with some setbacks:

- Royal Air Philippines suspending its commercial passenger flights on JAN 4, 2026
- Air France and ZIPAIR Tokyo announcing they will be suspending their flights to/from Manila

However on the bright side:
- Manila's Ninoy Aquino Airport is getting new immigration/check-in kiosks
- Philippine Airlines is expanding its presence in the Western Pacific with routes to Saipan and Palau starting MAR 29
- Cebu Pacific to add direct flights to Riyadh from Manila from MAR 1

2025 was a big year for Starlink which is more and more becoming the future choice of inflight Wi-Fi.

Starlink added big name airline partners like Emirates and South Korea's Hanjin Group (Korean Air/Asiana).

We can expect more airline partner announcements with them in 2026.

I personally have yet to get the chance to fly aboard a Starlink-equipped aircraft. Hopefully this year it will happen.

I will say props to Airbus for its handling of the recent A320 groundings, along with the airlines and aviation regulators.
