GA Backyard Birding

Not sure how many eggs are in the nest cup, due to how the Wren built the nest, but I can finally see one today.

It was very similar during the last brood, too. The camera really is in a bad spot for a House Wren nest. Next year, I may put a couple of cameras in the box and only use one that gives the best view of the nest cup.

EDIT: YouTube Posts apparently don't let you zoom in an image, so it's hard to see the egg in this photo. Also, it destroyed the quality of the photo, too.

The Wren has apparently brought in a piece of snake skin into the nest cup. That or the snake that raided the prior nest shed some while it was in there.

GA Backyard Birding

The House Wren is continuing to build out the nest cup. Today she brought in grass, feathers and some shiny plastic foil material.

And as unlikely as it may seem, I do believe the nest cup is even more hidden this time compared to the last nest she built, as you can see in the photo. Yes, that's her tail sticking up, while she's mostly hidden under the ledge of sticks.

I was hoping to get the first egg this week, which may definitely be in there, but obscured, but will will just have to wait and see. Not knowing will make it hard to determine the incubation and hatching timeline. Silly Wren!

GA Backyard Birding

So about a week before my House Wrens were set to fledge, a ratsnake entered the box and ate them. Due to a severe storm just before the event, I was without power and didn't see it on my 2nd monitor. Otherwise I would have ran out there and yanked it out, since it was still daylight.

About a week or so later, the House Wrens started cleaning up the nest to lay a second brood, so I thought I had better install some kind of predator guard before another snake arrives. I ordered a 24" pole baffle and a small black slinky from Amazon and installed them on the late one evening, hoping it didn't scare off the Wrens. Luckily, it didn't, as the female was back in the nest that evening.

Anyway, though it's hard to see the slinky, here's what it looks like...
