#ForgottenHeroes 💫 | Born in the remote village of Burj Littan, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Lakha Singh was a five-time national champion boxer, and an ex-armyman.
He represented India at the 1994 Hiroshima Asiad, earning a bronze for the nation in the 81kg category. He subsequently won bronze at the 1994 Asian Boxing Championship in Tehran and silver at the same championship in Tashkent the following year. He also represented India at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
From there, his life would take a turn. While en route to the World Military Boxing Championship in 1998, he would slip away at the Texas Airport, presumably in pursuit of a better life. He finally returned to his native village in Ludhiana in 2006.
He went on to work as a taxi driver, facing immense financial struggles, before his former coach and Dronacharya Awardee Brij Bhushan Mohanty reached out to offer him a coaching job in Ranchi. In 2020, Lakha was finally awarded the Dhyanchand Award for his lifetime of achievements in sports.
In the words of Mohanty, Lakha Singh still remains one of the best boxers he ever trained.
