pray for our brothers and sisters in Syria after the deadly attack on St. Elias Church in Damascus, Syria, on June 22, 2025. The attack, a suicide bombing, occurred during Sunday mass and killed 25 people and injured dozens more.
I Islamic fundamental Saraya Ansar al-Sunna (Brigade of Sunni Supporters) later claimed responsibility, stating the attack was in response to unspecified "provocations by Christians in Damascus". Saraya Ansar al-Sunna is described as a little-known Sunni Muslim fundamental group formed after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. They are reportedly behind various sectarian threats and attacks targeting minority groups, including Alawites, Christians, Druze, and Shiite Muslims.
The attack has been widely condemned, with concerns raised about the safety of Christian and other minority communities in Syria under the new government. Some Christian leaders have expressed frustration with the government's response, including the failure to declare national mourning or refer to victims as "martyrs".
