So I looked this up today due to the comments our president made saying that U.S naturalized citizens and sitting members of congress should be sent back , spot the irony. Let’s unpack it:
1. What Trump has pushed for
Trump has often spoken against “chain migration” (family-based immigration) and birthright citizenship.
He has suggested ending or limiting birthright citizenship, meaning children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents would not automatically be citizens.
He also targeted family reunification visas — the same system that let many immigrant families bring relatives (like Trump’s mother did when she came from Scotland).
2. How his own family benefited
His grandfather Friedrich Trump came from Germany with little money, became a citizen, and brought over his wife, Elisabeth.
Under the marriage laws of the time, Elisabeth automatically gained U.S. citizenship through Friedrich.
His mother Mary Anne MacLeod immigrated from Scotland, worked as a servant, then became a U.S. citizen — she got in under the very immigration system Trump later criticized.
3. The difference
What Trump has proposed would mainly affect future immigrants and their U.S.-born children, not people already here.
If those rules had existed in the past, his own father (Fred Trump) and possibly even Donald himself might have faced questions about their citizenship.
