Hi everybody! Just wanted to let you all know: Had a small health hiccup (is that how you spell hiccup), which coincided with other issues, but:
I am very ok!
I didn't die, no greatly life changing things happened, my wife is well, Happy is happy.... all in all our range of problems fall fully into the range of first world.
Thank you for everybody that's been checking in on me. I read all the emails, even if I didn't reply to all of them. Thank you for all that love. Makes me tingle in places ❤️
The main reason you haven't seen much of me on YouTube is because the almighty Monsieur Algo has deemed my channel unworthy. I believe we went from a solid 60k average to a solid 2k average views per video. While even 2000 people watching my video is appreciated, it's not something I can live of off, so to make a medium-length story a little bit longer: That's why I shut YouTube down.
Yes, there were two recent uploads (Greek Freaks and Norse Shore), but those were more due to sponsor obligations than anything. Also, I had fun experimenting with AI animation on those ones. Had they popped off, I probably would have done more, but... it was not to be.
There is every chance I will return to YouTube in the future. I will not close this channel — the videos are evergreen education after all, and I truly believe that on some of my topics, I provide the most entertaining education out there. So I'll definitely leave them up.
All that being said: Briefed is not gone entirely — it continues on TikTok, where I go by the same name (there are like 15 copycat accounts, but I'm the one with 1.9 million followers, all others are fake). Over there I've been uploading on and off, but will pump those numbers up to two 3-minute videos per week starting in February. So if you miss my husky voice, head on over to TikTok. If you hate TikTok, I totally get it, and will also upload all these shorts on YouTube, although with a slight buffer. So while my long-form return to YouTube is up in the air, you can 100% expect short-form Briefed content on YouTube by mid February.
To everyone that is still supporting me as a YouTube member and over on Patreon: Thank you! Just do know that you are now supporting the latter — two short form videos per week. I will try to provide perks for members, but, for now, supporting me out of the goodness of your heart is all you're doing. Before I can provide perks and dedicate more time to content creation again, I have to land on my feet in my new job first. So far I stuck the landing, so nobody is starving in Casa Briefed, but the adjustment period leaves only the weekend to produce content for all of you. I'm doing best to deliver.
So... this is not the end of Briefed. I am still alive. We'll be seeing each other twice a week in February.
In the future, I also plan to create mythology and history comics — much in the way I created my videos: Make these stories compelling and put them into standalone comic issues. However I don't expect any results on that front before at least June. Whenever that happens though, I'll obviously promote the living crap out of it here.
You might have noticed that the views on the channel lately have not been what they used to be. This can have a number of reasons, and I am in the process of making various changes to probe for every possibility. One is that I've simply strayed too far from the roots... this channel started on mythology after all, and it's been mostly 20th century history as of late.
So....
Back to mythology we go. The only question is:
Do you want me to alternate mythologies every week or give you months straight of one mythology?
My plan is to walk you through the entirety of Greek and Norse Mythology (the main timelines and biggest events). For Greek Mythology I mapped out 30 videos, each 5-10 minutes long, for Norse mythology we are looking at 15 videos of the same length.
These videos will be fully animated, and may or may not feature my handsome face. They will also build upon each other somewhat, so think of it like an actual animated series on the mythology with episodes.
So, do you want me to alternate between Norse and Greek mythology every week, or do one of the mythologies all the way through every week?
This is the single best history channel I've come across in the last 4 years, and... its latest video has 93 views in its first hour!!! That is nothing, and I know how YT scales... this is not a good start, even for just an hour after release. This video deserves so much more — it is absolutely incredible. Sadly it is also an example of how quality does not get pushed anymore with the current algo.
If you like Briefed, you will love this video, so please give it a chance and watch it. I tip my hit to Tiny Realms and its creator. Absolutely stunning! In fact it makes me want to step up my game.
I don't know the guy, and he didn't ask me to do this (probably will never know I did), but he absolutely deserves it.
I'm making this poll available to all viewers, because the text explaining it is very important. The poll itself though mostly concerns members:
So, as you can see by my last upload — I switched from still art to animation. Now that the videos are animated — what would Immortal members like to receive as their "art perk"? I'm working hard to upgrade the Immortal perk to getting the videos a week earlier, but I'm swimming in work these days since I am fighting against a YT algorithm that is not pushing my videos anymore. To be honest, I am thinking about shutting the channel down and taking my writing/hosting elsewhere since this is a job after all.... and with the performance of the last couple of videos, I can't justify/afford the effort that each video needs for much longer... Don't worry about old Uncle Handsome though — sole content creator skillsets are in high demand, so this is a luxury problem of just me wanting to maintain my channel, not anything close to an existential threat.
But yeah... I don't know what changes Youtube made, but it's been a death blow to Briefed. I'll try to keep it up (heh), and, if I can, members will soon get videos one week earlier. If I can't, well... bye bye Briefed — but I'll do a more detailed post on that anyway.
So... to explain the poll: Every animation is made from still artwork. The animation style may vary over time — 3D, 2D, artsy... whatever, so the still image will always be in the respective style. I just need to know which you would prefer.
Happy broke my laptop. Yup my new puppy son chewed through my MacBook. It’s ironic because when we got him from the shelter I was like “wow that’s so much cheaper than getting him from an expensive breeder AND we’re doing a good thing.” Now the MacBook repair is like super expensive…. It’s ok though, Happy is simply in debt now, doing some good old dog labor to pay it off, 25 hours per day, no breaks. He’s talking about starting a union, but I’m on top of things.
Sooooo that means I’m on a forced vacation, but luckily I am an unhealthy workaholic and the next two videos are already uploaded on YT, set to go live every Sunday.
That leads me to the actual BIG NEWS:
Starting tomorrow I am switching to animation. The style in the images above is the animation style I’ll run with first. But I’ll definitely be playing around with other styles too.
Why the change? One of my biggest dreams is creating an animated show - this is taking me one step closer.
Why #2 AI has evolved to the point of making it possible. I know some people hate AI, but seeing as all my art has always been AI, I don’t think those people are watching my videos anyway. While I understand the dislike for it, I simply see it as a new tool - as photoshop once was. In my case, it gives me the possibility to fulfill my creative dreams, and hey…. I still put 15 years of script/novel/creative-writing into it. (Also, for example, I’m not upset that AI can be used to write, I prefer my own style and I’m happy others can use AI where they lack the words)
Why #3 The algorithm has changed. I’m sure I’m not the first YouTuber telling you this, and I’m sure I’m not the only one where you might have noticed some videos being completely dead. I figured with the situation being what it is, now is as good a time as any to make some changes.
Will the artwork come back? Possible. I might do some more videos with still art.
What happens to art for members? I’ll do a members poll, but I can still generate art for every video OR they get animation. We’ll see, but they won’t be missing anything.
Will my topics change? No, we’ll still be going back and forth between mythology, ancient history and contemporary history. The only thing I might do is do all of Greek and Norse mythology again, as well as all of Rome. This time animated, with consistent characters throughout all videos. So the same Zeus from the Zeus video will also appear in the Perseus video, and the same Julius Caesar from his own video, will eventually appear in the Augustus video - etc.
Other changes: I will up the pace significantly in these videos - the animated videos will be between 8-12 minutes long.
I might upload twice a week. Maybe. For now we stick to Sunday.
I might experiment with some videos that are pure animation with voice over, without my face - just to see what it’s like.
Aaaand that’s it. Let me know what you think. Anything you completely disagree with, or any input or cool ideas?
