Ty's PROSTATE CANCER CHAT

Welcome to our Prostate Cancer community! Here, I share everything I wish I had known before and after my prostate cancer diagnosis. From mental health and sexual function to dealing with incontinence, we will cover it all.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, undergone a radical prostatectomy, or are just starting this journey, you’re in the right place. Let’s break the stigma together and support each other towards the best recovery possible.

Ty's PROSTATE CANCER CHAT

What up Fellas, I am posting a new video about a medical decision that could have easily cost me my life prior to diagnosis.
Until a recent discussion, I had forgotten that I use to voluntarily "opt-out" of the digital rectal exam during my yearly physical . I did that for a couple of years because of the stigma and the discomfort. I luckily opted back in in time for early detection. Please share if you have a similar story or anything words of advice to help men who "opt-out" understand the consequences of that decision.

Ty's PROSTATE CANCER CHAT

Hey Fellas, I wanted to share a quick heads up about UTIs because even years after your radical prostatectomy things like scar tissue or bladder changes can still put us at risk. Please do not ignore signs like burning urination, cloudy urine, that frustrating feeling that your bladder is not quite emptying or lower back pain. UTI infections can quickly become serious if you don't catch them early. If you feel off in your pelvic region or notice your bladder is not fully emptying like it should make sure that you contact your urologist.

Ty's PROSTATE CANCER CHAT

While SEPTEMBER is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, It is in NOVEMBER when our disease hits center stage.
If you are in a place to do so, be sure to attend the Prostate Cancer related seminars or presentations where you live. Get some friends and do No-Shave November together. I went on the website and bought the No-Shave November wrist bands and I hand them out during the month. I realize that not everyone is ready or in a place to do this but I promise you that if you are able to do it, it will change how you see your journey.

Types of Incontinence After Prostate Cancer Treatment

Here are the main types that you could see after prostate cancer treatment, especially surgery or radiation:

1. Stress Incontinence
Urine leaks during physical activity that puts pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing or exercising. This is the most common type after prostate surgery.
2. Urge Incontinence
A sudden and strong need to urinate followed by leakage. Often caused by an overactive bladder and frequently seen after radiation therapy.
3. Overflow Incontinence
Occurs when the bladder does not empty completely, leading to constant dribbling. This may result from nerve damage or blockage.
4. Mixed Incontinence
A combination of stress and urge incontinence. Patients may experience both types of leakage depending on the situation.
5. Arousal Incontinence
Leakage during sexual arousal, either physical or psychological. Happens when pelvic floor muscles relax during arousal, similar to stress incontinence

Mental Technique for Erectile Function Recovery

I am sharing with respect and humility, the process I came up with to incorporate the mental stimulation piece needed to combat the outcomes of Prostate Cancer related ED.
The goal is for me to share the method I used to reconnect my mental stimulation with pelvic floor engagement. This is not medical advice. It is my personal process that helped me so much and I CRINGE at sharing it. Just in case I do not do an video on this topic, I wanted to share it with our community. I hope it helps someone!!!

Purpose
To encourage blood flow through mental stimulation and pelvic movement. This may support erectile function and core strength. This is a mental process that I created that can be used in addition to any manual process you have in place.

Preparation
Take prescribed ED medication. For this exercise, I use Sildenafil (Viagra). Keep in mind that I am also on a daily dose of 5mg Tadalafil (Calais). when the Sildenafil starts to make me feel warm, it signals that I can start my exercise( Be mindful of the number of pills prescribed so as not use too many on the workout)

Mental Focus
Sit in a sturdy chair. Choose a quiet space. Close your eyes and think of a moment that brought excitement or desire. It can be a memory or a future scenario. The goal is to engage the mind and body together.

Body Position
Sit firmly with your buttocks pressed firmly down into the seat. Feet should be planted flat with toes pointing forward. Keep your back straight and your core engaged.

Movement
Begin a pelvic thrust without lifting your buttocks. The movement is upward and slightly forward. Avoid scooting or sliding. Hold for a second and release. The key is to squeeze the buttocks together and thrust from the pelvis only without anything else moving. Hold for a second and release.

Repetition
Currently I do three sets of twenty-five repetitions. Focus on reconnecting that movement and your thoughts. As you exercise, do not get frustrated, the goal is to retrain your brain to send blood flow during this action (movement).

Progress
Over time, this combination of mental focus and pelvic movement worked wonders and I could do it without the ED medicine. I began doing this while sitting throughout the day. My core became stronger. This exercise along with manual stimulation, accelerated my progress.

Additional Benefit
This exercise may also support core strength and help with incontinence recovery.

Note
This may not work for everyone. It is shared with the hope that it may help someone. Please consult your doctor before starting any new routine.

QUESTION: I was responding to a post today and I thought about the idea of doing a live video for Q&A and just discussions for about an hour or so. This disease is so personal for us men and I know I decided to be online but some of you would not feel comfortable doing it.

This would of course be a discussion based on the process I used to navigate my prostate cancer journey because I am would never give you medical advice. When comfortable, I am sure others will begin to share their journey as well. Maybe you just want to log in and feel less alone.
