Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces under Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The toll has been devastating: over 150,000 people have died in the fighting, more than 500,000 children have succumbed to malnutrition, and around 15 million people have been displaced—either within Sudan or as refugees abroad. Despite the scale of the crisis, the war has received little international attention.

Millions of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe over the past years. Many have died or gone missing trying to reach the continent, more than 3,000 people in 2023 alone. These numbers pose a challenge for political leaders in countries receiving migrants as they struggle to find ways to deal with people driven from their homes by conflict, poverty and climate change.

DW Documentary has recently broadcast a number of documentary films on the topic of migration made by filmmakers from the African continent and would like to use the opportunity to discuss the questions: What challenges or problems does large-scale migration cause? What are the reasons for concerns in Europe, and are the continent’s migration policies adequate? What are the positive effects of migration? Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was sentenced in absentia by a Belarus court to 15 years in prison on Monday, March 6. The charges include treason and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya ran for the presidency in 2020 against Alexander Lukashenko, who claimed victory. The results were considered by opponents as fraudulent, and thousands of people took to the streets to protest. Since then, Tsikhanouskaya has been living in exile.
