Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces under Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The toll has been devastating: over 150,000 people have died in the fighting, more than 500,000 children have succumbed to malnutrition, and around 15 million people have been displaced—either within Sudan or as refugees abroad. Despite the scale of the crisis, the war has received little international attention.

To shed light on the situation, DW Documentary commissioned the coproduction ‘A Hospital in the Shadow of War’ (DW & ZDF for ARTE) released in June 2025: https://youtu.be/lb9WYCR3Z4s. This powerful film highlights the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.

To deepen the conversation, join us for the live online panel discussion ‘War in Sudan: Why a Nation Is Falling Apart’ on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 18:00 (UTC+2) on the DW Documentary YouTube channel: youtube.com/@DWDocumentary/streams The panel will explore amongst other topics: the current humanitarian and political situation in Sudan, the roots of the conflict, and the role of foreign actors, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Russia, and Egypt.

Millions of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe over the past years. Many have died or gone missing trying to reach the continent, more than 3,000 people in 2023 alone. These numbers pose a challenge for political leaders in countries receiving migrants as they struggle to find ways to deal with people driven from their homes by conflict, poverty and climate change.

DW Documentary has recently broadcast a number of documentary films on the topic of migration made by filmmakers from the African continent and would like to use the opportunity to discuss the questions: What challenges or problems does large-scale migration cause? What are the reasons for concerns in Europe, and are the continent’s migration policies adequate? What are the positive effects of migration? Can migration provide unique opportunities, not only for those making their way to Europe, but also for Europe itself?

The online panel discussion 'Migration to Europe: Crisis, Challenge, Chance?' will cover these topics. Join us for the discussion on December 12, 2023, at 18:00 (CET) / 17:00 (UTC): youtube.com/live/iy9xD7oWFpc
