Matthew Lee Johnson, 49, was put to death by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit on May 20, 2025 — exactly 13 years to the day after the crime that sent him to Texas’ death row. On May 20, 2012, Johnson robbed a Garland convenience store shortly after it opened, splashed 76-year-old clerk Nancy Harris with lighter fluid, stole cash, jewelry and cigarettes, then set her ablaze before fleeing with a few candy bars. Harris managed to describe her attacker to police before succumbing to third-degree burns five days later. Johnson, arrested the same morning, admitted the crime at his 2013 capital-murder trial, blaming crack-cocaine intoxication but accepting responsibility; jurors sentenced him to death.
