Since Feb. 2, 2021, David Matlow has showcased more than 250 items from his 6,000-piece collection in Treasure Trove, appearing weekly in The CJN.

“Since so much to do with Israel is enveloped in conflict, we may forget that its existence is a miracle and that we are privileged to live at a time when it exists. Items from the past illustrate the commitment and sacrifices that were required to create the state,” writes Matlow. “Those efforts remain critical. What we are doing today to protect Israel and help it through this most difficult time will be the subject of the Treasure Trove columns of tomorrow.”

The #2026WinterOlympics are about to begin, and Jews around the world are excited to cheer on their fellow members of the Tribe.

The Menschwarmers previewed some of the athletes, from the United States, as well as Israel, which is sending a sizeable delegation of nine athletes, including a brother-sister alpine skiing duo, a nationally celebrated figure skater, and a Floridian lawyer looking to break new ground in skeleton racing.

Hear all about them and more in the latest episode of Menschwarmers: https://youtu.be/kDpIEPNYtkI

Joining the registry is easy. If you’re 17-35 and in good health, you can request a free swab kit that arrives at your door. Swab your cheek for 30 seconds. Mail it back. Done. If you are ever called as a match, the donation process is similar to giving blood. Five minutes of your time could give Daphne decades more with her grandchildren.

Or, if you’re aged 17-45 (limited kits for 36-45!) and in Toronto, join the stem cell swab drive on January 25th, any time from 10am-4pm. Drop in at Beth Tzedec; no appointment needed.

Register here: helpdaphne.org/tzedec

Look out for more swab drives across Ontario coming soon — next up is London, ON on Jan 27th, 4-8pm at Chabad at Western.

Ellin talks to Winnipeg’s Belle Jarniewski, who attended Sabbath services this past Saturday at Shaarey Zedek. She is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, and has spent decades teaching the Holocaust and antisemitism to local schools and universities. Recently, she was named director of the new Manitoba Institute to Combat Antisemitism.

“Yelling things like ‘Hamas is coming to get you’. That’s a threat. And people should have been arrested that day,” Jarniewski said. “When threats are made, the laws need to be enforced. And that’s part of the problem because I think that people have seen, understood it as permission to go a step further and further and further.”

“What prompted my letter today to the chief of police and to the police service board was two years worth of harassment, intimidation, and hate that’s been directed to not only the Jewish community, but to law-abiding citizens of Ontario that make up the 99.99 per cent of the population that simply wants to go about their lives and live safely in their own homes and communities,” Michael Kerzner told The CJN.
