How we approach the design of the dashboard for our electric 1960s 4x4s, or how we control a lot of complex electronics with some switches and dials.
Interior design is perhaps the most important factor in modern vehicles - power, handling, reliability are all great these days - and manufacturers put a lot of effort creating something different.
Usually that means bigger (or multiple) screens that integrate all the vehicle controls and info, which often comes at the expense of usability. Theres a trend where a vehicle goes all in with screens and touch controls, then brings a few physical things back the next generation. What’s fun to play with in the dealership is often confusing when out on the highway.
We avoid screens in our vehicles as it’s not in keeping with the original design. We still think physical switches and analogue gauges are more usable, more of the time. Admittedly our cars don’t have a lot of ‘features’. But we like that too. We do have a screen under the bonnet that shows details of the vehicle systems, you just don’t need to see that when driving.
