šŸ–ŒļøšŸŽØI’ve been loving our little Second Chance Art Resolutions series. Plus, getting to see the art wall develop in our Patreon Discord is going to be so fun! I’ve also love seeing you share over on TikTok since the comments let you put in pictures. I’m so proud of all of you in showing up for yourself and for many of you trying to re-establish a sustainable art practice.

In the ideal world, everyone could have a dedicated space for creating, but I know that’s not a reality for most. In this series I encourage you to use the supplies you have or ones you’re excited about. That being said in case you’re curious about what I am using I have included all of the items I’ll be using throughout the series here- www.rebelunicorncrafts.com/artwallsupplies I truly do love these supplies and think you can do so much with them whether you’re painting at home or on the go. If you ever want to go back to any of the videos or one didn’t make it onto your feed, I’ll be posting all of them into this playlist- www.youtube.com/playlist?list... .Ā

I hope you’ve been having fun with it so far and that this series truly helps you get a sustainable momentum in your creative journey.

There’s a trend going around on social media having people look back 10 years to 2016. My world looked so different then- it was the first full year in our home, I was traveling a lot for work, and overall I was busy doing normal adult things. Everything was great, but there was something missing. 2016 was smack in the middle of my years where I lost any sort of art practice. I looked through all my photos in 2016 and I found 1 painting I did, or at least 1 I had started. It’s the one that looks vaguely like a taped off outline of a dog’s head. I assume I was trying to paint my dog, but I don’t know, that’s the only picture I have of it and I don’t even remember this project. The creative urge did leak out though in small and silly ways. I carved a fun dog themed pumpkin. Near the end of the year, I acquired a jigsaw on a whim and cut out a unicorn shape that I then stapled lights to in order to decorate our lawn for the holidays. But that’s all I really created during that year and honestly thinking back to the lack of creating makes me sad.

I wanted to, I *needed to* get back into some sort of creative flow and felt like I was starting over from the very beginning since it had been so long. Whatever talent I had years prior with painting or sketching had just…gone. Holding a brush felt unfamiliar and clumsy and the year that followed when I tried things, I felt so discouraged by how hard it all felt.

Eventually, I made myself a little schedule where I made myself spend at least an hour once a week trying creative things to try and get back in touch with my inner creative drive. One of the things I tried during this time period was fluid painting. The process-based nature of it felt low pressure and I was mesmerized by watching the paint flow around. It also felt like a science experiment where I could study and understand the variables. There was something about this process that got me excited to create again- I couldn’t wait to get home from work to play with some new idea or new variable.

Ultimately, finding a low pressure way to play with art supplies is what gave me the push to keep going with art. I fell in love with watercolor and the reason I share low pressure exercises like patterns, textures, and repeating shapes is that I believe doing these types of things can do many things. First - it just might help give you the confidence to do more. Second - it calms my brain down and allows me to relax and process. Third - it’s just fun!

I know sometimes it feels pointless to paint something that doesn’t ā€˜look like’ something, but sometimes that can be the point entirely- just to create. Sometimes, it’s exactly what you need to be able to take that next step and paint something that does look like something.

I know I did a lot of experimenting during that time of resetting, but I didn’t document it if I didn’t love it, and I wish I did. I wish I took more pictures of the play, even if it didn’t feel like a success because I’m sure looking back at it now, I could have seen so much growth and an evolution in my process and styles.

No matter where you are in your art and creativity journey, you are where you need to be and I want you to keep going. Notice what is catching and holding your attention, what is fueling your creativity, and it will be the spark to fuel your creative fire as we continue through 2026 and beyond.

šŸ“•I’m so excited that this year my book has more reliable stock for anyone wishing to give the gift of watercolor to someone special. And, as of two months ago, it’s available in THREE languages! I’ve loved hearing how some of you are using the Polish and German books to help you practice your language skills, while others of you have picked it up because it’s now in your preferred language. It’s such an honor being a part of your watercolor journeys. If you’re still looking to get one, I have several links for options here: tinyurl.com/mywatercolorbook

šŸ“—My second book’s deadline has just recently passed and I’ve had a lot of fun making my nails match with some of the tutorials in my second book. I have made sure each lesson is able to teach you great skills, but my nails have been a great way to add a bit of whimsy, too.Ā

I've been loving showing you guys some forms of watercolor that aren't the typical pan or tube paints. I'd love to know your guys' experiences with any of these. Which form of watercolors do you guys like to play with or are you most intrigued by? šŸ‘€šŸ–Œļø

Nick and I have been loving the changing colors with all the leaves. When we go for walks we each try to find our own perfect leaf and it changes every time. If you were to pick out your most perfect autumnal leaf, what color would it be? Feel free to describe it more in the comments! šŸ‘€ šŸ‚ šŸ

🌌Iceland was such a dream and I’m so glad I had my custom sketchbook to share what I created during my travels. Whenever I share anything travel related, two questions inevitably come up: where do I get (insert travel supply item here) and how can I make my own sketchbook?

I know some of you say that when I link something in the comments you aren’t able to click it easily, so I wanted to address both those in an accessible way. Many of the supplies I like for travel are in this list- tinyurl.com/unicorntravel . If you don’t see something there, it’s probably either my brand/from my store or things I’ve picked up along the way from stationary shops. And for the sketchbook, I’ve included a link to it attached to this blog, so hopefully this helps you create your own custom sketchbooks!

šŸŽØšŸ–Œļø Every month in my Patreon we get together on a Google Meet and create together. Sometimes we go through a tutorial I lead and sometimes we go through challenges together and it’s the patrons that get to vote and decide what we’ll be doing. This month’s vote has decided that we’ll be doing a limited color challenge.
It’ll be a great opportunity to help unlock how to choose colors and saturations to play with values in making a cohesive and interesting painting and not just focus on color matching. If you’ve been around for a while, you know I used to do quite a few of these (I’ve linked one here) and I can’t wait to see everyone’s paintings on Saturday!

There’s still time to join if you’ve been looking for a way to boost your skills and be a part of a truly amazing community- patreon.com/rebelunicorncrafts

šŸ‚The mornings have had a chill in the air and there’s no doubt that autumn will be here soon. I’m trying to soak up these final moments before the seasons shift and when my garden flowers are no longer blooming. I challenge you to look around, get inspired by your surroundings, and create something to celebrate the end of summer (or winter for my friends in the southern hemisphere).

I’m sharing some pictures from my garden to help give you a boost. āš ļøThe 5th/last one has a very cute little spider friend in case you need a forewarning or prefer to skip that one.
What will you be creating?

šŸŒIt’s here! The German-translated version of Learn to Watercolor (Einfach Aquarell!) by Lacey Walker is live and I look forward to hearing if any of you see it in your local bookstores! I’m so excited that the book will be more accessible to those who feel more comfortable following along in German (or Polish) and love that some of you are going to use the translated versions to practice your language skills. So clever!

You can order the German translation from here- www.amazon.de/Watercolor-Starter-Set-Anleitungen-A…

I wonder which language might be picked up next for a translation… Spanish? French? Dutch? šŸ‘€

šŸ“– And by the way, thank you for all of your curiosities and excitement for my second book in my last post! I’m still in the thick of writing things, but look forward to sharing more with you over the next year! It truly is a privilege to be part of your journey with watercolor.
