Hello YT friends, in prep for my new album release (8.30.24) and memoir (2.04.25), we are reimagining the look of the Channel. BTW, grateful to all of you and your support and welcome to all the newcomers! Because I'm both a record producer and a solo recording artist on my own, there are all kinds of music to be found here over a big span of time. You can check out my own singer-songwriter and jazz projects, and many artists that I've produced. I need your help with something while you're checking everything out: Please be active with listening, watching, liking and commenting. If you're like me, you're probably tired of YouTubers saying this. I get it. But we truly are at the mercy of YT's algos. So rather than despair, I'm just asking for a solid from you all. That's it. Enjoy the latest single "Turtle in a Chinese Food Box" featuring the legendary harmonica player, Charlie McCoy (Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel) — https://youtu.be/5xPftcx0kZU?si=O5swq... Peace to you.
Hello friends, Video Tuesday again. This time with a debut vid from 2017 just recently edited. "Wendell Berry in the Fields at Night" featuring the great Jeff Coffin on baritone saxophone, Jerry McPherson on guitar, Vicente Archer on upright bass, and Derrick Phillips on drums. Enjoy, like and comment to your hearts content. It is always appreciated. Book launch plans are going well. Still looking for more of you to sign up though. Appreciate it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7S_T...
Hello CP Channel folks, it's Video Tuesday—like and comment please! Thank you. University life is underway once more just down the street from our home. "DoriChromoDomo" is a composition written for the Lipscomb University Jazz & Improvisation Workshop, filmed and recorded at Blackbird Studios, December 6th, 2016, featuring clinicians Matthew White (trumpet) and Jeff Coffin (saxophone).
The class was taught by drummer/artist Marcus Finnie and myself. This was an end of semester treat for the students to work in a big-time studio with some amazing clinicians. The name of the composition is such because it was meant to be a study in dorian modes, chromaticism, and dominant V chords. There’s some difficult stuff in here and they rose to the occasion! If you have or know of a student musician looking for a commercial music program, please consider the Lipscomb University School of Music and the Commercial Music Program—all within the College of Entertainment and the Arts.
Greetings YouTubers, friends and fans. 🎶 Exclusive Release Alert! 🎶
Remember James Taylor's soulful "Long Ago and Far Away" from his 1971 album, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon? The song that beautifully followed his iconic "You've Got a Friend" and danced its way into the U.S. Top 40 hits?
Well, Charlie took on a unique challenge to cover this classic. It wasn't just any project; it was a special covers challenge among friends during the unforgettable Summer of 2020. And we've got this rare cover just for you! (You can tell CP didn't write this can't you!) 🎧 Dive into a bit of nostalgia and listen to CP's soulful rendition now. Please subscribe, comment, and like.

Now to the video! "“Big Man’s Hat” was nominated for Rock Recorded Song that year and I was asked to play a minute and thirty second version. No matter how much we kept cutting out we still didn't get it to be exactly 1:30. Honestly, this is definitely the strangest version of this song ever recorded! The lyric never really gets to the point of telling the listener what the deal is with the big man’s hat. Well, they were making a TV show and running a live event on a very tight clock—so I don't think logic played into it. Still it's very energetic, which is especially amazing to me since 12 hours before this broadcast I was sick in bed. I do remember casting Eric Darken to play marimba, which I’d never used on the song before (though it was a big part of the song “Lie Down in the Grass” thanks to Bongo Bob Smith). I thought a marimba would look very unique visually, still sound good, and likely not be something this audience had seen or heard before in rock performance. Purple suit contrasted nicely with Aaron’s yellow Sonor drums!" ENJOY!!
Happy Friday to all! The photo for the day is from the fall of 1988 at Studio D in Sausalito, CA recording Margaret Becker's Immigrant's Daughter album. Who remembers? Here's a YT link to the album from the wayback machine: https://youtu.be/adbVrAWYfOY

Many thanks to Dan Russell who advised MB to get with me and Peter York at Sparrow Records in LA made it happen. MB was a total pro and fantastic to work with. That album was my first Grammy nomination for Rock Gospel. Thank you MB! Nerd alert below—credits and more credits. #sacramento#nashvillemusic
