HCF stands for "Highest Common Factor." It is the largest number that can exactly divide two or more numbers without leaving a remainder. Finding the HCF of two or more numbers is a common task in arithmetic and algebra.

Here's how you can find the HCF of two numbers using different methods:

Method 1: Prime Factorization
Prime Factorize each number.
Identify common prime factors.
Multiply the smallest power of each common prime factor.
Example: Find the HCF of 36 and 60

Prime factorization of 36:
36
=

Prime factorization of 60:

Method 2: Division Method (Euclidean Algorithm)
Divide the larger number by the smaller number.
Use the remainder as the new divisor and the previous divisor as the new dividend.
Repeat the process until the remainder is 0.
The divisor when the remainder becomes 0 is the HCF.
Example: Find the HCF of 36 and 60

Step 1:
60

36

60รท36=1 (remainder 24)
Step 2:

36รท24=1 (remainder 12)
Step 3:

รท
12
=

24รท12=2 (remainder 0)
HCF: 12

Method 3: Listing Factors
List all factors of each number.
Identify the common factors.
The largest common factor is the HCF.
Example: Find the HCF of 36 and 60

Factors of 36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36
Factors of 60: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60
Common factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

HCF: 12
