No two ocelots wear the same pattern. Each coat is one of a kind.

Meet the 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐭 🖤🐆 (𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑜𝑓𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑠 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑎)

This elusive wild feline lives in the dense forests of 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚, where it spends much of its life in the trees. Its 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 — nearly as long as its body — acts like a balancing tool, helping it move gracefully along branches high above the forest floor.

With its swirling coat pattern, the marbled cat is 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙙 — 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨. Clouded leopards are much larger, more powerfully built, and have distinctive cloud-shaped markings, while marbled cats are smaller, lighter, and more delicate in appearance — and far more rarely seen.

Because it depends on intact forests, the marbled cat faces serious 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Protecting wild forests protects cats like this — and countless other species.

Wild cats from the tiny Rusty-spotted cat to tigers and lions have backward-facing barbs called papillae covering their tongues 🐅 These sharp, keratin spines help them:

• Strip meat, fur and feathers from bones 🦴
• Grip prey
• Groom their fur to remove dirt and parasites
• Cool themselves through grooming.
Recent research shows that the U-shaped cavities at the tips of the papillae wick up saliva and transfer it deep into the fur to help the cat regulate its body temperature through evaporation.
