The Man Who Designed India’s Flag 🇮🇳?

From a humble village in Andhra Pradesh rose a visionary whose silent contribution shaped a nation. Pingali Venkayya (born on 2 August 1876 near Machilipatnam/Bhatlapenumarru) was not just an unsung hero — he was a freedom fighter, educator, geologist, agricultural researcher, polyglot, and, above all, the designer of the Indian National Flag.

At 19, while serving in the British Indian Army during the Second Boer War in South Africa, he felt a deep wound in his patriotism when Indian soldiers saluted the Union Jack. The need for an Indian symbol, for a flag we could call our own, was born in him.

Between 1916 and 1921, Venkayya devoted himself to researching national flags — poring over the designs of more than 30 countries, and even publishing a book titled Bharatha Desaniki Oka Jatiya Patakam (“A National Flag for India”) with 30 designs drafted.

In April 1921, at the Indian National Congress session in Bezwada (now Vijayawada), Mahatma Gandhi invited Venkayya to present his proposed flag. Within three hours, Venkayya created a khadi‑bunting design: two stripes — red for Hindus and green for Muslims — with a charkha (spinning wheel) at the center. On Gandhi’s suggestion, he added a white stripe for other communities. This design became known as the Swaraj Flag and was raised at Congress meetings starting that year.

By 1931, to move beyond religious symbolism, the red band was changed to saffron (symbolizing courage and sacrifice), the stripes reordered to saffron‑white‑green, with the charkha on the white stripe. The charkha signified self‑reliance and progress. Later in 1947, when the Constituent Assembly approved the flag, the charkha was replaced by the 24‑spoked Ashoka Chakra (hip with law and dharma), while retaining Venkayya’s three‑color layout. The flag was officially adopted on 22 July 1947 — just weeks before India’s Independence.!!
