The Maharashtra government on Tuesday granted revised administrative approval for two new Metro corridors Kharadi–Swargate–Khadakwasla Metro Line and Nal Stop Warje Metro Line in line with earlier clearances from the Union government. Together, the two elevated corridors will span 31.6 km and include 28 stations. The total project cost has been pegged at ₹9,857.85 crore, with the Union and state governments contributing ₹1,212 crore each. A Government Resolution (GR) issued by the state also authorises a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding with Maha Metro, the state government and the Centre.
The Union government had approved both routes in November 2025, after which the proposal was sent back to the state for revised approval. As per the GR, Maha Metro will execute both corridors and arrange funding for the ₹4,694 crore loan component from external agencies. The lines are expected to significantly improve connectivity across key high-traffic areas such as Sinhagad Road, Nagar Road, Solapur Road and parts of Hadapsar. Maha Metro officials said preliminary work has already begun, with finalisation of station locations, access ramps and alignment details currently underway. The tendering process for execution agencies is expected to start in the coming months, while commuters have urged authorities to complete the project within a five-year timeline.

Concerns over construction safety have been raised at the under-construction University Chowk flyover and the Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi Metro corridor, following a deadly incident involving an under-construction Metro structure in Mumbai. A formal letter was sent to the commissioner of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, seeking a comprehensive structural and on-site safety audit. The communication flagged risks such as unsecured construction materials, exposed structural components, overhead elements, and debris accumulation at project sites, calling for immediate corrective action to prevent accidents.
The demand follows the February 14 collapse of a parapet segment from the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 4 viaduct in Mulund, which resulted in one death and injuries to three people. The letter urged PMRDA to identify accident-prone stretches, verify structural stability, inspect temporary works, and ensure compliance with engineering standards. It also called upon Pune Municipal Corporation to clear debris, close barricading gaps, and improve signage around construction zones. PMRDA officials stated that the authority would not rush the opening of the Baner ramp of the flyover and would prioritise safety checks before commissioning.

Following cabinet approval and a ₹6,000 crore allocation, land acquisition for the Purandar International Airport has accelerated, with district officials claiming consent for over 93 percent of the required land across seven villages in Purandar tehsil. According to the Pune district administration, nearly 2,900 acres of the approximately 3,000 acres needed have been covered so far, involving more than 3,200 farmers. The project is being executed through Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and is targeted for completion of land acquisition by June 1, 2026. The airport is expected to ease pressure on the existing Pune airport while supporting industrial and logistics growth in the region.
However, resistance continues in parts of Pargaon Khandala village, where some farmers have questioned the transparency of the consent process. Residents have alleged that certain consent letters may not reflect informed approval, particularly among elderly landowners. While villagers clarified they are not opposed to development, they demanded clearer communication on compensation and rehabilitation terms. District officials maintain that the acquisition is being carried out legally and say individual objections are being reviewed through formal channels. With consent levels officially reported between 93 and 95 percent, the coming months will test whether administrative outreach and compensation assurances can resolve remaining concerns on the ground.

Maha Metro has opened a new underpass connecting the Swargate Metro station with the MSRTC bus terminus, offering relief to daily commuters navigating one of Pune’s busiest traffic zones. The underpass allows passengers to move between Metro and bus services without crossing congested roads, strengthening Swargate’s role as a developing multimodal transport hub. Of the three planned entry exit points at the station, two are currently operational.
Commuters, however, have raised concerns over the slow progress of the remaining access toward Ganesh Kala Krida Manch and Sarasbaug, urging authorities to complete the work before the monsoon. Regular users also flagged poor signage for the newly opened underpass, lack of a dedicated pedestrian pathway, and the absence of a parking facility despite Swargate being the originating station for the corridor. Passengers further demanded strict action against illegally parked autorickshaws near the station and Swargate Chowk, saying these issues undermine last mile connectivity and commuter safety.

Citizen activists have renewed demands for a comprehensive review of the implementation of the Real Estate Regulation and Development Act after strong observations by the Supreme Court of India on the functioning of real estate regulators across states. Activists said thousands of homebuyers continue to face delays, with cases pending for years and recovery warrants remaining unexecuted due to weak enforcement by regulatory authorities. They argued that the issue lies not in the law itself but in how it is implemented on the ground.
The remarks have also reopened debate on appointments to RERA bodies, with activists questioning the effectiveness of appointing retired officials without adequate administrative authority or accountability. Experts pointed out that Maharashtra earlier had stronger deterrence under the Maharashtra Ownership Flats Act, which allowed criminal penalties for violations. They alleged that lobbying by Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India led to dilution of accountability. Representatives from Watchdog Foundation said enforcement failures under MahaRERA have left buyers frustrated despite favourable orders, highlighting the need for systemic reform rather than legal amendments.

The state government has approved Pune Municipal Corporation as the sole planning authority for 23 areas merged into city limits in 2021, ending years of administrative uncertainty. Until now, planning control in these fringe localities remained with Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, even as PMC provided water supply and civic services. This dual authority system created confusion for residents, developers, and homebuyers, especially in matters related to building permissions and infrastructure planning.
A notification from the state urban development department has now withdrawn PMRDA’s status as special planning authority for these areas. PMC will prepare a fresh development plan, grant building approvals, plan road networks, and execute civic infrastructure works. Civic officials said PMC will soon receive all past permission records and its share of revenue collected earlier. The decision follows repeated demands since 2021 by elected representatives, activists, and residents seeking clarity. Officials believe the move will enable planned and accountable development in the newly merged areas.

The Maharashtra government has permanently abolished non agricultural tax following directions from the state revenue minister announced on Wednesday. The notification amends the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code to remove both the annual NA tax and the requirement for separate non agricultural land use permission from the district collector, provided the proposed use aligns with the sanctioned development plan or development control regulations. The reform is expected to ease redevelopment and regularisation of old housing societies in cities such as Pune, Mumbai and Thane.
Experts said the decision corrects a long standing structural issue in urban land administration. Cooperative housing representatives welcomed the move, calling the British era provision outdated and inconsistent. Legal experts noted that development authorities can now grant approvals directly, while municipal bodies will update land revenue records, with a one time premium applicable at the building plan stage. However, concerns remain over clauses allowing recovery from landholders whose land was converted to NA use in 2001–02, with stakeholders indicating possible legal challenges.

Elected representatives from the Pashan and Baner Balewadi areas carried out a field visit on Tuesday to review and speed up work on long pending missing road links in the Pashan Someshwarwadi Baner Balewadi belt. These proposed road links are critical for easing traffic congestion and improving access to the Katraj Dehuroad Bypass. During the visit, corporators directed Pune Municipal Corporation officials to prioritise land acquisition and finalise compensation packages, citing slow progress as a key hurdle.
The missing links reviewed include roads in Kaspate Vasti, the Pashan Baner link road, and Someshwarwadi. Representatives said delays were largely due to unresolved compensation issues, and officials were asked to ensure visible progress within the next three months. While civic authorities expressed confidence that work would accelerate, residents remain cautious, pointing out that similar meetings in the past failed to deliver results. PMC officials said concrete plans would be prepared soon and reiterated that twelve missing road links across Pune are targeted for completion this year.

Pune Municipal Corporation aims to complete a major portion of the new Sadhu Vaswani Bridge within the next four months, ahead of the monsoon season. The bridge project, originally scheduled for completion by March, has faced delays due to technical complications while laying a water pipeline beneath the railway tracks. Officials said revisions in the execution plan were necessary, resulting in the project timeline being extended by at least two months.
The new four lane Sadhu Vaswani Bridge is being built to replace the old two lane structure and is expected to ease traffic congestion in the Koregaon Park area. Since construction began, commuters have faced prolonged diversions and traffic disruptions. PMC officials said coordination with the railway administration is underway to finalise construction of the span over the tracks, while residents and daily travellers continue to urge faster completion, especially with the monsoon approaching.

Daily commuters in Pune have raised concerns over the poor condition of several roads that were not included in the recent international cycling event, urging Pune Municipal Corporation to take up repairs on priority. While the PMC resurfaced around 75 kilometres of key roads such as JM Road, FC Road, SB Road, University Road, Karve Road and Tilak Road, residents say many heavily used internal roads continue to suffer from uneven surfaces, potholes and misaligned drainage chamber lids.
Commuters highlighted stretches near Model Colony, Lakaki Road, Pune railway station and the RTO area as requiring urgent attention due to patchwork failures and unsafe riding conditions. Residents from newly merged areas like Manjari Road said long pending widening and maintenance work has worsened daily travel. PMC officials stated that a target has been set to repair at least 50 drainage chamber lids per week and that contractors will maintain roads upgraded for the cycling event, while local engineers have been instructed to begin repairs on other stretches.
