Today’s topic, phones in school
Okay so, in my school/state we just have to turn in our phones at the start of class, placing them in a calculator slot, and we get them back when the bell rings, this system is great, it gets our phones off of us for the class period and we have less of an easy distraction. This allows us to still have easy access to our phones incase of emergency, And most students follow this rule because it’s not completely crazy or hard to follow.
However my state is planning on changing the law to make it so you have to turn into the office before school and then get it after school, this is a bad idea and a recipe for disaster. Having probably 100+ kids go to one small room at the start of school and at the end of school to get they’re phones back so they can go home is just going to be an organization nightmare. This is just a straight up bad idea. And could be more dangerous for kids who have to have their phones for medical stuff, like for one example having to check blood sugar. As well as this law is completely ignoring the actual problem schools are facing with engagement.
Low engagement in schools is the main problem, and phones are mainly getting blamed as the source of this problem, however I would like to also state that the material and ways of teaching are also a main cause of low engagement. A lot of our generations in middle and high school have a lot more of this habit of wanting more of a choice in what they learn, and wanting to understand how what they are learning can apply later.
Like let’s say you’re in an history class and you have this project of making a presentation of something that really interests you from the renaissance, you can make the presentation as a video, poster, slideshow, or any other way of presenting it, this project is more likely to hold a persons attention and get a better understanding of a topic and allows them to do the project with more of a choice in it which raises engagement.
While a project where you have to talk about one topic, with a bunch of restrictions, and you have to present it in a slide show or something, that gets less engagement from you because you don’t have a choice and there’s less room for creativity.
And with previously done studies, schools where students can learn what they want however they want has a surge in engagement because students want to be able to do what they like so they pay attention to what they are learning.
We cannot blame phones as the main problem without also blaming school teaching system at the same time.
