The 2026 edition of Tasmeem is “Transmit,” translated from the Arabic word حَوِّل (Hawwil), symbolizing the transfer of knowledge and ideas from one person to another. This concept of shared knowledge is deeply rooted in Islamic principles, where knowledge is viewed as a trust (amānah) meant to benefit all.

Similarly, art and design are ongoing processes where each new creation builds on what has come before. As a creative community, how much further can we grow if we share, learn, and create together, making knowledge and processes accessible to all?

Tasmeem Transmit seeks to showcase the possibilities that arise from embracing creative commons principles; highlighting the role and efforts of creative practices, critical research, and archives as essential public resources for re-establishing the chain of knowledge.

Our Materials Library hosted "DESI 510: Materials & Methods" this semester for first-year MFA in Design students.

For RE-PRESENT, students designed a cultural artifact/souvenir - reflecting Qatari culture or their own backgrounds - and explored how meaning is carried through form, materials, and narrative. Through mold-making + casting, they tested replication, variation, and mass production principles, and presented their outcomes at the Materials Library.

A few highlights from the Alumni Homecoming gathering which took place at Bin Jelmood House at Msheireb Museums.

The keynote speaker was Class of 2019 Interior Design graduate and Class of 2025 MFA in Design graduate Yasamin Shaikhi.

"Have fun with your work", she told her fellow alumni. "Be you and you’ll be surprised at where it will take you. No project is small enough, dumb enough, hard enough or irrelevant. No project is worth not executing, trying even experimenting with.

"So if you have had something to work with in the back of your mind, but never took that step out of your head, this is a sign from the universe, get brainstorming or even, just put the idea in a sentence and start sharing with it with someone."

Michael Wirtz, Leland Hill, and Khawla Kittaneh from our Comics Lab hosted a two-day workshop, titled, “Comics: Story and Structure” at Geekdom 2025 in Lusail, Qatar.

Participants explored how to turn their daily routines into creative narratives, learning the art of developing and illustrating their very own comics.

The Comics Lab, which is part of our Institute for Creative Research, aims to structure production and publication as academic communication, inviting academics who study comics of the MENA region to curate anthologies of work around regions, themes or narratives.

The Comics Lab can be found at the Art & Design Library at VCUarts Qatar.

Our Continuing and Community Education (CCE) team in action at the Doha Film Institute festival Majlis lounge pop-up!

CCE hosted a block-printing workshop featuring an original design by Shima Aeinehdar — an “artist emergency kit” brought to life on a tote bag, celebrating all the essentials an artist might need.

Block printing is a hands-on technique where designs are carved into a block, inked, and pressed onto fabric or paper to create bold, beautiful impressions.

Held from November 21–24, the workshop welcomed 75+ participants who brought incredible energy and creativity to the space.

A huge thanks to everyone who joined us — we loved creating with you and can’t wait to see you again next year!
