Japan Airlines First Class - A350-1000 London to Tokyo
So the question we had before flying is it worth $10k?
Well, recently we got to experience this aboard their A350-1000 in their brand new First Class Suite, from London to Tokyo.
Check-In - The experience at Heathrow left a lot to be desired, the queue for Business and Economy seemed to progress quicker than the F queue, even though there were only a couple of us there, the check-in agent was friendly enough and once formalities were complete we headed upstairs to the premium security which we have never found to be an issue at Heathrow Terminal 3.
Lounges - JAL recommends the use of the BA First Class lounge, although we went to all the First Class Oneworld lounges and will have a separate review about this, let me tell you we would NOT recommend the American First Class Lounge.
Boarding - As ever in Japanese efficiency boarding commenced on time and we were promptly boarded, upon boarding we were immediately greeted with a friendly yet service-driven smile, and shown to our seats…. Or should we say “Suite”, the config is 1-1-1 so that gives you an idea of the size of the suite, what was really good was the crew immediately offered to show us the features and pointed out the shoe stowage and offered some slippers.
Suite - The suite is unbelievable, it feels like a room (although it does not have floor-to-ceiling doors), it must only be beaten by the Etihad First Apartment, or Singapore First. The finishes are refined and non-flashy which we both prefer, with no gold to be seen anywhere… the suite allows a maximum of 3 people in it during flight but for take-off and landing it is 1. The first thing you notice is the size of the entertainment screen at 43inches - it really is a big one… then looking at the seating controls there are plenty to look through here, with numerous controls, the suite can accommodate partner dining so that is what we did, more on that later around the food.
Dining onboard - I suspect if you want western flavours you may end up disappointed as the menu is very heavy on Japanese cuisine, which we think is rightfully so… the options included numerous options but we both decided on the Japanese Menu, it was course after course, some of the items I would never have tried otherwise as I am fussy, but it was great to develop my palette and put the holiday to a good start. The crew even offered the Caviar service which was on the Western menu, this was fun although…. Not sure what the fuss is about?!?
Alcohol - The selection of alcohol is great, although we are no wine connoisseurs we can tell a nice wine we think when we try one. Sadly no Salon as not ex-Japan although the other options are reasonable and vary in pricing, even tried the famous Tea… which was interesting (it tasted of tea…), the stand-out item was the Whiskey which was totally fabulous!
Amenities- The amenity kit provided is great and includes all you could need, including a CHARGING CABLE which is so useful and well thought out, you also receive a Shiseido 3-step skincare routine which I found nice.
Sleep Quality - After eating we both decided to get some rest, the benefit of the suite is the sheer size you feel like you're in a bed, the downside was the mattress options of soft/firm both felt rather firm to us, although the pillows and duvet were of a nice quality and pyjamas fitted very well. A word of warning the cabin can end up being slightly warm so my fan came in handy!
Arrival into Haneda - there are no special measures for First Class arrivals although the immigration and baggage were efficient enough, just remember to pay attention to how you do the customs checks people seemed to be rather confused!
