The suspect in a deadly school shooting in western Canada was an 18-year-old woman with mental health issues who killed her mother and stepbrother before attacking her former school, police said, but investigators did not offer a motive for one of the worst mass slaughters in Canadian history.

The killer died by suicide after the shooting on February 10 in Tumbler Ridge, a remote community of 2,400 people in the Pacific province of British Columbia.

Exclusive: Elon Musk’s Grok continues to generate sexualized images of people even when users explicitly warn that the subjects do not consent, Reuters has found.

After Musk's social media company X announced new curbs on the artificial intelligence chatbot's public output, nine Reuters reporters gave it a series of prompts to determine whether and under what circumstances the chatbot would generate nonconsensual sexualized images.

While Grok’s public X account is no longer producing the same flood of sexualized imagery, the Grok chatbot continues to do so when prompted, even after being warned that the subjects were vulnerable or would be humiliated by the pictures, the Reuters reporters found.

Spain will ban access to social media for minors under 16 and platforms will be required to implement age verification systems, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on February 3 as he announced several measures to guarantee a safe digital environment.

Sanchez's left-wing coalition government has repeatedly complained about the proliferation of hate speech, pornographic content and disinformation on social media, saying it had negative effects on young people.

Australia in December became the first country to ban social media for children under 16, a move being closely watched by other countries considering similar age-based measures, such as Britain and France.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 29 that he wanted to build a "sophisticated relationship" with Beijing, signalling a reset after years of strained ties.

On the key day of his four-day visit to China, the first by a British prime minister in eight years, Starmer spent around three hours with Xi during a formal summit and lunch, chatting about soccer and Shakespeare alongside diplomatic talks.

"China is a vital player on the global stage, and it's vital that we build a more sophisticated relationship where we can identify opportunities to collaborate, but of course, also allow a meaningful dialogue on areas where we disagree," Starmer told Xi.

Starmer is the latest Western leader engaging with China as nations hedge against unpredictability from the United States under President Donald Trump, whose tariff threats and pledges to grab control of Greenland have rankled long-standing allies like Britain.

U.S. National Park Service staff removed a slavery exhibit from a Philadelphia historic site in line with President Trump's claims, rejected by civil rights groups, of "anti-American ideology" at historical and cultural institutions.

The exhibit was at the President's House Site in Independence National Historical Park, where the first U.S. president, George Washington, lived when the city was the nation's capital. It described the history of slavery and Washington's ownership of enslaved people.

Civil rights groups say the Trump administration is rolling back social progress and undermining the acknowledgment of critical phases of American history.

President Trump said on January 22, he had secured total and permanent U.S. access to Greenland in a deal with NATO, whose head said allies would have to step up their commitment to Arctic security to ward off threats from Russia and China.

News of a framework deal came as Trump backed off tariff threats against Europe and ruled out taking Greenland by force, bringing a degree of respite in what threatened to be the biggest rupture in transatlantic ties in decades.
