Seven broken ribs. A punctured lung. Induced comma. And a return to competition four months later.
Duncan McBride, 71, fell off a horse four months before last August’s Summer Nationals, leaving him severely injured and on a ventilator as doctors worked to re-expand his lungs.
”I almost died,” the Los Angeles Peninsula Swimmers member says.
He spent weeks in the hospital and got back in the water just two weeks after being discharged. He finished third in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 50 butterfly at Summer Nationals.
”I got through it and got back on the sports horse,” he says. “I was literally overjoyed.”

Karin Roth, 77, is an absolute SWIM LEGEND.
She learned to swim butterfly at age 52 and ranks in the USMS Top 10 in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM in the 75-79 age group. Her advice: “It’s never too late to learn something new.”
Swim meets are also a family affair for the Legends Masters Swim Club member. Her son Daniel has been by her side every step of the way, from premeet preparation to cheering her to taking photos throughout meets. “It was absolutely everything to me to have him at the event,” she says. “Feeling loved and grateful.”

Holy Cow! Patrick Sullivan had open heart surgery three years ago to repair an aortic aneurysm and replace a heart valve with one from a cow. Now that the 48-year-old is back in the pool and faster than ever, he hopes to motivate others to keep swimming after surgery. Keep it up, Patrick!

Would you get up to start swimming at 3:45 a.m.? John Goode did!
The Google Masters Swimming member set a goal to swim 1,000 miles in 2025. With Google’s pool closed on weekends and holidays, he had only about 250 days to achieve his goal. That means he needed to average about 4 miles a day, meaning he needed the early start to get all of his distance in. His lanemates would join him mid-swim and cheer him on during their morning workout hours.
”At Google, it’s ingrained in us that if your goals don’t make you slightly uncomfortable, they aren’t big enough,” says John, 58. “It was a moonshot in the truest sense of the word.”
John achieved his goal and is now working on his butterfly technique. We can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next!

🚨 Major Announcement 🚨
The 2027 U.S. Masters Swimming Summer National Championship will be Aug. 4-8, 2027, at SwimRVA in Richmond, Virginia.
The facility most recently hosted the 2022 Summer National Championship, at which competitors combined to break nearly 60 records. More than 1,100 swimmers are expected to participate.
“We’re excited to bring Summer Nationals back to Richmond and partner again with a community that has demonstrated such a deep commitment to aquatics, Masters swimming, and exceptional events,” USMS CEO Dawson Hughes says. “The SwimRVA team and the Richmond region offer the facilities, experience, and hospitality our members expect at a national championship and a destination that makes the entire trip memorable for swimmers and their families.”
